SPORTING.

Since the announcement was made that Mr J. L. Crawley's blk m Brenda had been matched against Mr J. Corbett’* br g Captain in a mile and a half hurdle race (owner* up) for £25 a Bide, the interest in the i**ne of the event ha* been daily increasing amongst the ■porting fratercity|of Ashburton, and on Thursday it culminated in a very large gathering on the racecourse, a few ladies a'bo evincing their interest In the event by patting in an appearance on the grand stand. Both horses came to the post very fit, and so confident were the owners of their respective chances of success, that while in the weighing room another £5 a side was mutually added to the stakes. With the public both horses were pretty equally fancied, but the balance of favor leaned slightly to the side of Captain, Mr Corbett’s cool generalship in the saddle on former occasions gaining for him a few extra backers. Shortly after the time fixed for the race, Mr Simpson Bant the horses away to a capital start, Brenda quickly assuming a good lead, and taking her fences in capital style. In this respect Captain followed Brenda’s example, and took flying leaps over the three first hurdles, but up to this point still kept well in the rear. His position in the race, however, was evidently mnoh against his will, and was the result of a firm band on the bridle rein, for Corbett now began to give chase in earnest, and at the double fence the horses were abreast, and negotiated the huidles together. From this Captain gradually drew ahead, and was first over the last fence, and came down the straight home bard held, winning the race easily, while Brenda was being treated to a free application of the whip. The distance was a mile and a half, over seven flights of hardies. As indicated above, Mr Simpson acted as starter and Mr Stitt officiated ae judge. On coming away from the course the spectators were treated to a little further sport in the shape of a voluntary race between a hate, four greyhounds, and a number of less fl3et but equally ambitious member* of the canine family. After a long chase puss came to gri*f, but the excitement, though of short duration, was nearly equal to that centred in the race between Captain and Brenda. GERALDINE RACING CLOB.
