The great interest taken in the event was evidenced by the numbers that, soon before three o'clock, began to pour oa to the ground. The weather, about which considerable fears were entertained yesterday, luckily, was all that could be desired. It waa cool for the time of the year, and not windy. The ground was in splendid condition, and attracted the admiration of our visitors. The goal posts were pitched on the far side of the ground, and the arrangements generally were good. After some close play in the oeotre of the ground Plynn tried a run, but was prettily collared. After some very good dribbling and passing the ball was taken round to the Canterbury goal, and the Canterbury players were outflanked, when Hill, by a smart piece of play, secured a tonoh-down between the goal posts. With such a dead kick as Xhallon it looked a certain goal for Sydney, and so it proved, for the ball flaw unerringly through the posts. First blood for i-’ydney—--5 to 0. However, Lee got hold of the ball, and very neatly scored a touch-down. Sydney now brought the ball down the ground, and in a scrimmage a Canterbury player threw the ball right into Thnllon’s hands, who was standing outside. Ho made a dash for it, and was capitally collared bv Leach. A little more play in the S.W. corner of the ground and time waa called for the first spell. After a short interval the game wsb resumed, Canterbury now having the great advantage of the wind. Millton kicked off at five minutes to 4, and kicked a goal to start with, but unfortunately goals so acquired do not count. A little scrimmaging in the S.B. corner, and Walker ran right across the ground.
