Mr Spurgeon intends sending a minister from his College to be stationed at Ohine- ' mutu. A young man, son of Mr T. Thompson, city Councillor, and one of the leading importers, has been found guilty of fagranoy and ordered to quit Auckland. WELLINGTON, September 20. Earl Kimberley has oabled to the Government that the American Government intends sending a party to New Zoala id for the purpose of taking observations of the transit of ! Venus, and asks that facilities would be given to them to do so. The Government have replied that every faoility and all information , in their possession would certainly be givon i o them. i The following telegram has been reoeived • by the Murine Department from the authori--1 ties at Kaikoura:—"Ketch Emerald grounded 1 in port yesterday, and filled. Her deok load 1 of timber has been landed. She is on har 1 beam ends, mast outwards. There is no , room for steamers till she is righted. Efforts , are being made to right bet and float her op the beach,"
f KAIKOURA, September 20. i The ketch Emerald, from Foxton, laden with timber for Kaikoura and Lyttelton, arrived here jetterday, and at low water, 1 when being berthed, she bumped on a rooky ledge abreast of the jetty and immediately filled with water. There was a heavy roll on at the time. The vessel is buoyed. By her cargo wharf oontraot, whioh h<»» just been let, it provides for the removal of this ledge. DUNEDIN, September 20.
