McGregor, of the Northern Company, goes home to arrange for the construction of a new steamer at a cost of £30,000, for passenger traffic Madame Valentine and a maa named Thompson were arrested for the alleged robbery from a bushman named Harry Collins of £3O, while intoxicated, in Madame's house. An old identity, James Bobertson, of Mangaro, aged seventy-six, died suddenly. He was one of the Daoheis of Argjlo's Scottish settlers, 1842. Mr E. Heeketh applied to Justice Gillies to* day and obtained leave to sue in forma pauperis in Lyttle t Lyttle, a New Plymouth divoroe case. The Auckland football team it going into daily practice for the return match with the Sydney team. WANGANUI, September 19. The charges and oounter charges made by the head and seoond masters of the Boys' High Sohool have been the subjeot of an en. quiry yesterday and to-day by the sohool committee, and by a conference of the committee and the Education Board. The committee ocoupied six hours in taking evidenoe, which went to show that the seoond master (Mr Steedman) was guilty of grossly insubordinate conduot towards his superior, while Mr Francis (the head master) was greatly deficient in tact and judgment. The report of oommittee recommended that Mr Francis receive three months' notice of the termination of his engagement, and that Mr Steedman receive instant dismissal. The oonferenoe adopted the report of the committee, with a modification in favor of Mr Steedman, that he be requested to send in his resignation on or before the 25th init. j on receipt of his resignation one month's salary to be paid him in lieu of service. It was understood that it would be open to Mr Francis to apply again for the appointment. WELLINGTON, September 19. A little girl named Gertrude Wyndsor, aged two years, was run over by a fish cart to-day. The wheel pasted over her neok| death was almost instantaneous. An inquest will be held. In Chambers to-day in re Hunt v Gordon (Governor of New Zealand) his Honor Mr Justioe Biohmond allowed the defendant's evidence to be taken in London, at also that of one of the defendant's witnesses, Mr Graves, Consul at Samoa, on certain terms at to oostt, &c. BEEFION, September 19. A monster public meeting was held here last night re the East and West Coast rail way, and resolutions were adopted unanimously endorsing the aotion taken in the matter by the inhabitants of Canterbury, and affirming the desirability of co-operating with Ohristohuroh people. A railway league has been formed, and the names of all influential residents enrolled. The agitation will be actively followed up. TIMARU, September 19. A reward in each case is offered by the Insurance Association for a due as to the perpetrators of the recent fires at Denis Heffernan's, Waitohi Flat, and T. Lyle's, watchmaker, Timaru. DONEDIN, September 19. Edwin Marlow, of the Union Shipping Company, pleaded guilty to two charges of embezzlement to-day, and was committed to the Bupreme Court. Three other charges were withdrawn. The total amount before the Court wat £4OB. The comet was plainly visible all the forenoon here to-day. Forsyth's rabbit exterminator, which has been referred to in Parliament, was tried here to-day. Ten rabbits were placed in artificial burrows, and poisonous gas pumped in, and all the holes dosed. In half-an-hour all the rabbits were taken out dead. Professor Blaok, who speaks well of the invention, yet asserts that poisoned grain is undoubtedly the best plan for getting rid of the pest on a large soale. The annual meeting of the University Counoil was held to-day. The Bev. Dr. Stuart was reappointed Ohauoellor, and Mr Justioe Williams Vice-Chancellor. It was resolved to invite applications for lecturers for the Medical Sohool. The Chancellor stated five leoturers would ba required, three to begin their duties in 1885, and the other two in 1886. For the A, and P. Association horse parade on Thursday forty-seven Clydesdales have entered ; also, ten thoroughbreds, five ponies, five carriage hones. At the Lawrenoe Supreme Court only one case came up, that of Charles Sue, charged with burglary. The jury, without retiring from the box, found a verdiot of not guilty.
