Charles Davis was committed for trial on a charge of larceny of £IOO from the Kamo Hotel, Wanearei, WELLINGTON, September 12. In Chambers this morning, before J. Richmond, the issues (thirty-four in number) were settled in the pending suit of W. J. Hunt y his Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon. An application to change the venue to Christchurch was refused. Counsel for defendant applied to have the evidence of Sir Arthur Gordon and one witness taken in London by commission. Hie Honor took time to consider this point. The trial will be held before Judge Richmond at tho civil sittings in January, and it is expected to extend over a week. Mr E. Shaw has been retained for Mr Hunt, and Messrs Bell, Oonolly and Harper for Sir Arthur. TIMARU, September 12, At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day Mrs Bridget Leonora Ryan, who was arrested at Dunedin last week on her way to Melbourne, was charged with obtaining goods by false pretences. The case was dismissed, but she was immediately afterwards rearrested on a charge of cattle stealing, A warrant is out for her husband for a similar offence, but it is believed that he has cleared out of the colony. OAMARU, September 12. A six-roomed house belonging to Mr John Andrew, of Hampden, was burned down last night. Everything in the house was consumed, and I£o bank notes, which had been drawn from the bank the previous day, were also burnt. The house and furniture were insured for £SOO in the Victoria Office. The occupants were away from the house when the fire began. A little girl named Bryne met with an accident on the railway line at Waitaki last evening. She was being driven along the line In a trolly, when the shawl she wore became entangled in the wheels, and she was drawn off, the wheels of the trolly going over her legs. No bones were, however, broken. An invention has been patented by Messrs Harper and Keck, of this town, for driving tiamoars by gas motors. The gas is stored in chambers under the seats of the oars. The invention will probably be brought into use on the proposed tramways here. DUNEDIN, September 12. The Compensation Court, under Public Works Act, gave judgment re the claim of Donald Henderson for land taken by Oatlin’s River Railway. The Court ignored entirely the point raised for the Crown, that Government could deduct the increased value of land effected, giving judgment for a lump sum of £539,
Young Marlow, the Union Shipping Company’s clerk against whom a warrant was issued for embezzlement, was arrested tonight at Port Chalmers. INVERCARGILL, September 12. The mystery surrounding the discovery of the remains of ■■n infant buried in the bush here has been satisfactorily dispelled, Tho child was stillborn, and the offspring of a married woman deserted by her husband. Being in poverty, she buried the child in the bush, thinking it no harm. Fortunately Dr. Galbraith, who attended the woman, is now the house surgeon at the Hospital, and being called to make a post mortem, , identified the child by a malformation. No inquest will now be held.
