The comet was plainly visible in th© north-east during the early morning. The nucleus is equal in brilliancy to the planet Jupiter. Mauritius advices to August •-iiHh are to hand. The new season sugar market hss opened, but only a small quantity of assorted sugars are yet available. SYDNEY, September 11.
Arrived, this morning—The Unioa Company's steamship Arawata, from Auckland.
The French warship Distress arrived here to-day. It recently visited the New Hebrides group to punish the natives for tho murder of certain French traders at Espirito, Santo Island. One of the principal native villages was bombarded for two henrs and completely destroyed. The settling of the lata Australian Jockey Club's spring meeting took place this eveniag. Tho total stakes amounted to £6033. Sting, the winner of the Association Plate and Eandwick Plate, was sold at auction to-day for 1600 guineas.
