The treasury account*, made up to the end of June, show a credit balance brought to the present year of £IIO,OOO, being £37.000 above the estimates in the Budget statement, The Viotorian Sheopbreeders' annual show attracted large numbers of people. Philip Russell, of Carnghan, won the champion prize for the best merino. Altogether the show has never been surpassed. O'Farrell, in his defence at the Brighton Police Court, virulently attaoked the Archbishop, and dcolared that he only intended to frighten him, but that the revolver exploded accidentally. The Archbishop deposed that he had had financial transactions with O'Fjtvrell, having paid him £SOO on one oooasion. The trial of Bowe and another for stealing Arinski's jewellery came to a sudden termination, owing to the refusal of Roberts, who alleged he had reoeived the property, to give evidence in the oase on the ground that Judge McFarlane had icsuited him during his own trial, as Roberts is now undergoing five years. The Judge was unable to compel him to give evidence, and the jury were consequently discharged. The victory of the Australian oricketers has given great satisfaction to oolonists. The president of the orioketero' association has telegraphed congratulations. It is proposed to entertain the team with a ball on their arrival. The Board of Enquiry on the charge against Winoh, Superi tendent of Polioe, for having borrowed money from a publican named Bowe, report that the oharge is not borne out. The passengers per the Wairarapa have presented Captain Chatfield with an address of thanks for his oourtesy and kindness. All the papers speak in the highest terms of the latest addition to the Union fleet. jg,The Very Rev. Dr. Baokhouse has been dangerously ill, but is now rather better. Francis Burns was brought up at Hamilton yesterday charged with the murder of Quinlivan, and was remanded to Friday. The remains of Quinlivan were exhumed, and it is stated a hole was found in the skull, apparently caused by a blow from an axe. SYDNEY, September 6. The Diocesan Synod selected thirty-one names oE eminent clergymen for the Bishoprio of Sydney. These bava u-jw been reduced to thirteen, from whom the final selection will be made. The Gunga has left on her return voyage to Fiji. The captain and orew rejoined her at the Quarantine Station. A very large and destructive fire occurre.l at the premises of Messrs Mitchell and Company, wholesale grooers, Sydney, on Sunday. Some matches ignited in the back premises, and the flames rapidly spread to a quantity of kerosene and wine whioh was stored there. A great conflagration ensued, and the whole premises were totally destroyed, only the walls are now standing. The loss is estimated at £20,000, whiob is m arly oovered by insurance in the principal offices. Mr Mitchell is a paasonger by the incoming 'Frisco steamer. The Diamond, which has returned from the South Seas, has been actively engaged in visiting the scenes of the late outrages on Europeans. Some villages and groves have been shelled. The Rev. Penny, stationed at Port Puroie, has rendered valuable assistance in endeavoring to secure the arrest of Pulio, the ohief, who took a prominent part in the murder of Bower.
