SYDNEY, September 7,

The schooner Merchantman, 184 tons, of this port, struck on a reef near Port Hockin to-day, and sank shortly afterwards in deep water. All hands got ashore in safety. Sailed, this afternoon—The Pacific mail steamship City of New York for San Francisco via Auckland.

The iron workers of this city are agitating for an increase of wages on acconnt of the high price of provisions, and a serious strike is imminent.
