LICENSING COMMITTEE.
CHBI3TOHUBOH WES I'. The quarterly meeting of this Committee was held at noon to day. Present—Messrs B. Westerns (chairman), O. A. Pritchard, and J. Anderson. EXTENSION. The following extensions to midnight were applied for: —J. Or. Clark, White Horse Hotel (Mr Maude); P, Connolly, White Swan (Mr Loughnan); R. Hill, British Hotel (Mr Longhrey) ; 0. Deal, Botherfield (in person). la reply to the chairman, Sergeant-Major Mason said all the houses in the district were conducted most admirably. The Chairman said that the Committee noticed that in many oases no fire-escapes were provided. He wished to repeat the warning given yesterday, Mr Maude pointed out that, in connection with the White Horse Hotel, there were a number of ladders about which could be used as fire-escapes. Mr Loughrey said that, so far as the British Hotel was concerned, the fire-escapes had been ordered and would be placed that dsy. Mr Loughnan thought it was rather an advantage to have loose ladders instead of fixed fire-escapes, as, in case of fire iu the lower story, these might be burnt. The Chairman said that some means ought to bo devised to secure the exit In safety of persons in case of fire. The Committee, after deliberating, announced their decision as follows: —That the whole cf the extensions would bo granted. Sergeant-Major Mason said this was the only district in whioh a conviction had not occurred daring the year. Mr Loughnan applied for a permit to Mrs Connolly, of the White Swan, to sell under her deceased husband’s license until probate of the will was granted when a transfer could be applied for. The Committee granted the request.
TBANSPEB. Mr Loughrey applied for a transfer of the license of the British Hotel from Mr B. Hill to Mr V. Berti.
The Committee granted the application. Mr Maude applied to the Committee as to whether there could not be a reconsideration of the cases of Messrs J. Pox, Prince of Wales; W. Godso, Southern ; and B Ravenhill, Oaversham. He was afraid that under section 27 the extension could not be granted except at a quarterly meeting, but there was a section, viz., No. 127, which seemed to him to give the power to the Governor in Council to validate any steps that might be taken to cure an error. He desired to point out that the houses spoken of bore very good characters, and it was very great hardship to them, particularly when the largo number of extensions wore considered. Ha would ask the Committee to defer finally closing the matter till he had had time to consider it, and then the members of the Committee might support if they thought fit any application in their individual capacity that might be made to tho Governor.
The Chairman said the matter was entirely and completely closed so far as tho other committee business was concerned, but Mr Maude's best course would be to write a letter to tho Committee, who would then consider it. This closed the proceedings.
