The mile foot race to day between Burk* and O’Oonuor for £IOO and the championship of New Zetland v-aa run on the Caledonian Society’s ground to day. Groat interest was taken'in the nffair, and between 4000 and 5000 parsons were present. O’Connor had been a*(light favorite until within the past few doyc, the hatting then changing from 6to 4 on him (o even money at the start. The day was fine, but there wb» a strong wind which, in addition to the heavy track, rendered the tima po.’T. O'Connor went off at a t;re*t pate, end quickly showed that his tactics ware to obtain so commanding a lead that Bu'ke, whose finishing powers are remarkable, woi io not be able to catch him. Entering the fourth lap he had a lead of of about forty yards, which Burke had reduced at the end of the lap to between twenty-five and thirty. O’Connor was still running strong, and few thought Burke could catch him, but putting on speed by a wonderful < ffort Burke in the fifth and last lap gradually wore him down, and overahnndred yards from homo pissed him, winning by fifu-ta yards amidst uproarious cheers from, his local admirers. O’Connor stuck gamely to it till the finish. Time—4min 38seo.
