BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the members of the committee of the Benevolent Association and tho clergy was held at 2 p.m. to-day. Present— Mr O. T. lok (in tho chair), the Veiy Eev. the Dean, Revs. T. Flavell, Oholmondeley, O. Fraser, Bast, W. Morley, H. 0. M. Watson, Zaobariah, and Father Qinaty, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Booth, Mitohell, Hulbert, W. M. Maskell, W. Pratt. The Chairman read the resolutions arrived at by the sub-committee, which have already been published. Rev. Mr Flavell suggested that the 12 th November should bo the day set apart. Rev. Mr Morley seconded the resolution. Mr Mitohell painted out that the most business-like method would be to move the reception of the report. Rev. Mr Flavell would move that the report be received. This resolution was agreed to. The Very Rev, the Dean moved the adoplion of the first clausa of the report, fixing the Charity Sunday for September 24th. Rev. Me Flavell moved, as amendment—- “ That the 12th of November be substituted for September 24th.” Rev. Mr Morley seconded the amendment. Rev. Father Qinaty and Bsv. Mr Zaobariah opposed the amendment, as it appeared that they were postponing on one day what they did before.

Mr Booth suggested that they might allow such denomination to fix the date of their own collection not later than 12th November. Bev. H. C. M. Watson said that ne did not think they would get a good offertory by means of what they might call file firing in offertories.

Mr Maskell pointed out that the amendment now before the meeting simply meant more postponement even after their fourth meeting j and besides this they were asked to refer the whole matter to a body of gentlemen who had not been present amongst them, and it simply seemed to him that Mr Fiavell’S amendment meant throwing a wet blanket over the whole affair.

Bevs. W. Morley and Ohol nondeloy spoke on the subject, the first arguing that the change of date was a proper course, and the latter arguing against it. The Very Bev. the Dean spoke in favor of the collection being taken up in September. It was resolved that the Church officers be consulted in the matter as well as the Lay officers.

The question of the date was then put, and the amendment altering the date to Nov. I2th was lost by 10 to 6.

Bev. Mr Fla vail then moved another amendment—“ That the collection be taken on the second Sunday in October.”

This was not sec inded, Bev. Mr Morley moved—“ That the sth November be fixed for the collection.” Bev. Mr Flavell seconded the amendment. After some further discussion, Bev. Mr Morley obtained leave to withdraw his amendment. Bev. Mr Flavell moved a further amendment —“ That the third Sunday in October bo fixed.”

Father Qinaty strongly opposed any delay. Bev. H. O. M. Watson said it meant that eighteen congregations could not contribute if it was fixed for September 24th. The amendment proposed by Bov. Mr Flavell was put and carried. The original - resolution as amended was put and carried. The report as a whole, with the amendment in the first clause, was agreed to. Esv. Mr Morley called the attention of the chairman to the fact that the last resolution in the report provided for the appointment of a committee to draw up a new constitution and rules for the association.

Mr Maskell contended that the meeting, which wss simply a conference, had no power to appoint a committee to draw up a constitution to submit to the subscribers, Mr Mitchell and Bev. Mr Watson supported the resolution. Bev. Father Ginaty coincided with Mr Maskell in the views expressed by him.

After some little discussion the resolution was agreed to. The Bev. Mr Watson moved the following ns the committee to draw up the constitution : —Revs. Father Ginaty, Watson, Fraser, Zaohariah, Morloy, Messrs Jameson, Pratt, Maskell, Booth, and Mitchell. This terminated the meeting.
