Thomas Benning, late mate of the wrecked schooner Elizabeth Curie, was committed for trial for the Auckland hotel robbery. It is stated that be was drunk when he did it.

In the middle of the night Mrs Butler, in whose bed Miss Johnstone slept, was woke up by her getting up to vomit. Dr. Richardson was subsequently sent for, and as the girl got worse daily, she called in Drs. Walker and Purchase, but she succumbed, as above, on Monday. She never stated that she had taken anything, and readily took every medicine given to her, WANGANUI, August 30, The tea meeting and concert, held in the Drill Hall to-night, in aid of the Public Library, jwas a great success, and fully 700 persons sat down to tea. Daniel Ferguson writes to the “ Argus” from Slaty Creek to the effect that he and his party are making very fair wages, and he believes “ there ia a great country here for miners to prospect for quartz and alluvial.” He adds that the coming summer, with the track* opened up, should show something of the country between Slaty Creek and the old middle township of Moonlight. An adjourned meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of tho proposed City Tramway Company was held this afternoon, when Mr Proudtoot’a offer to dispose of his right, title, and interest in the tramways for £65 000 was accepted, subject to a company being floated. Provisional directors were appointed and steps were taken to draw np an agreement. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand have concluded arrangements for opening a branch in Melbourne on the Ist October.
