BEOCKLE COAL FIELD.
ißr Telegraph.] fFBOM THE “ PRESS.”] WELLINGTON, August 30. The report of Mr Herbert Cox. F.G.8., Assistant Geologist, on tho Brockley coal field, Malvern, was laid on the table to-night. The coal is of a quality intermediate between that of the Grey River and Shag Point coal for steam purposes, and amount available is about 300,000 tons. Mr Cox thinks it quite possible that coal may be continuous below the flat in N B. direction, flanking the Four Peak Range to the B.E , but this can only be proved by boring. Tho comparative value ot Brockley coal for locomotive purposes was tested in two engines of class (Nos. 84 and 86), and the “ ton miles ” obtained with Brockley coal were 56, as against 8 2 by the Westport coal, and 3.7 by that from Shag Point. The respective evaporative powers of the different coals being—Westport, 8.2 ; Brockley, 6.5 j Shag Point, 5.4.
