An inquest on the body of Knowles was held at Stratford yesterday, when the jury returned a verdict of *' Wilful murder against Antonio Sohonell,” who was committed for trial at tho Supreme Court. The prisoner was brought into town lest night, and is now in gaol. GISBORNE, August 30. The schooner Wainera, which wont ashore near hero, has been successfully floated. A whaleboat capsizod on the bar, and the occupants (five Maoris) suoceded in lauding safely. DUNEDIN, August 30. A fracas, in which two prominent legs! gentlemen were concerned, occurred yesterday. Fisticuffs were resorted to. Rumor says that Mr Christie, formerly manager of the branch of the Colonial Bank, becomes manager of the New Zealand at Donedin. INVERCARGILL, August 30.
The miners at the Bound Hill diggings petition the Inspector to locate a policeman there on account of the frequent robberies committed. It is pointed out that there are 500 Chinese as against forty Europeans on the field ; that the former not only commit robberies but assaults with impunity ; and that unless tho miners take the law into their own hands, which inevitably _ means bloodshed, and which they wish to avoid, they have no option but to apply ior police protection. __
