SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tb. 3 usual fortnightly meeting of this body was held at seven o'clook last evening. Present His Worship the Mayor, Ors. Langdown, Andrew, Hall, Brown, Forrester, Pavitt, and Webber. An enclosure from the Public Works Office, Wellington, covering oopy of a proclamation issp.ed by the Administrator of the Government, taking certain portions of B S 239 for the purposes of a street, as required by the Borough Council, was read, and referred to the works oommittee.

The City Council wrote, acknowledging receipt of the letter of the Sydenham Borough Council for the proposed orosßing over the South Belt, and in whioh the City Council adhered to its former deoision, in the interest of both city and borough. The letter was reoeived.

A requisition, signed by Mr E. Pavitt and about forty residents of Sydonham, requesting the Mayor to call a publio meeting, to consider the advisability or otherwise of the proposed extension of the northern railway, was then presented. The aotion of the Mayor in calling the meeting for Wednesday next was approved. Messrs Garriok and Oowlishaw wrote, enclosing lease of reserve 2379 for execution by the Oonnoil. The seal of the borough was ordered to be affixed to the document.

Mr Withers wrote asking the Council's patronage to a social gathering at Waltham Hall. The Couuoil's patronage was accorded.

The works committee reported :—That the Drainage Board had been written respecting the ilow progress made in restoring the streets of the borough to the same condition they were in prior to laying the sewage pipes, and stating that the Council will proceed with same, oharging its cost to the Board. That the recent letter of the Drainage Board, suggesting the Council shonld oonstrnot an open ditoh along Lord Brougham street, being opposed to the Board's letter of July 7th, the committee think the Board is neither noting courteously nor fairly to the district in the matter. That more broken metal had been ordered for repairing the Lincoln road. That the weather being favorable the foreman of works had been authorised to proceed with the construction of concrete channelling in the borough. That a large deposit of fine shingle and coarse sand having been discovered on the Oounoil's reserve at Ohaney's corner, a small quantity had been placed on the footpath near the Council Chamber to test its suitability for footpaths.

The report was adopted. The finanoe committee reported the receipts during the past fortnight as under: — Receipts, £297 15s 53 ; expenditure, £7l 16j 7d ; credit balance at Bank .€663 0* 6d. The report was read, reoeived, and adopted. The Mayor stated the result of the deputation re the Board of Health, whioh has been already made public The Council expressed its approval of the action taken by the Mayor and Crs. Brown and Favitt at the conference.

dr. Hall moved, Or. Brown seconded, and it wo* resolved—" That in tbe opinion of this Oounoil, united action should be taken by this Counoil and the Sydenham Sohool Committee to induce the North Canterbury Board of Education to provide a swimming bath for the 1000 children who attend the Sydenham school. In order to expedite suoh a movement, his Worship the Mayor, Ore. Hall, Andrew, and Forrester be deputed on behalf of this Oounoil to oo- operate with the sohool committee."

Or. Hall moved, Or. Pavitt seconded, and It was unanimously resolved—" That with a view to prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the borough, it be referred to the sanitary committee to report upon the idea of appointing a medical man to visit Sydenham borough school daily, and of requesting the Board of Health to send to the head master immediate notice of sickness reported to it, or by any other means that oan be devised.' 9 The question of abating the nuisance arising every summer from Jackson's Oreek was then considered, and the matter was referred to the works committee to draw up a recommendation thereon.

The Mayor said that he had a matter of vital importance to bring before the Council. He would read a resolution he had drafted, viz. :—" That this Council is of opinion that the Mayor should consult with the Mayor of Christohuroh as the propriety of inviting the leading gentlemen of the oity and suburbs to meet in the Oity Counoil Chambers on a stated day, and there discuss the question of inaugurating a Canterbury Benevolent Institution. Such institution, if formed, to be supported by voluntary contributions, with a Government subsidy of £1 for £1 collected, and to supersede the present Charitable Aid Board." This system had obtained in Otago for nearly twenty years, and had worked well.

Or. Brown had great pleasure in moving the resolution.

Or. Hall seoonded the resolution, whioh was favorably spoken to by most present, and carried unanimously. The seal of the Counoil was ordered to bo affixed to oertain documents. After which the Counoil adjourned.
