[ran fbbbb association.J AUCKLAND, August 26. A detective Is engaged investigating the late fire on the premises of W. G. Oonolly, building contractor, as incendiarism is suspected. The damage to timber and other goods was 1800. The property was nnirsured. Lieutenant Tamari of the Taukuba, on leaving, presented the Auckland Institute with a number of seeds of plants, fruits and trees from Japan. He expressed a hope that experiments would be made with these, so as to ascertain their suitability to the climate and the effect of the climate and soil,and send to Japan any notes or observations as to the progress and probable result of the experiments. DUNEDIN, August 27. The mile foot race between Burke and O’Connor (one of the Australian champions), which takes place next Saturday, Is creating a good deal of interest. O’Connor is slightly the favorite. Jem Mace gave a general athletic exhibition last night. One of the principal features was a wrestling match between Strong and Slade. The latter, after an excellent contest.
Jem Mace gave a general athletic exhibition last night. One of the principal features was a wrestling match between Strong and Slade. The latter, after an excellent contest, succeeded in turning tho tables on Strong by throwing him two out of three. Four stacks of wheat and one of oats were burned at Miller’s Flat last week. They were valued at £3BO, and were insured in the Now Zealand office for £230.
