CHRISTCHURCH BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the special committee appointed last week was held to-day at the office of the association. Market place, at 10 a.m. Present —The Bevs. H. C. M. Watson, i ather Ginaty, O. Fraser, H. Williams, W. Motley, E. A. Lingard, Messrs Pratt, O. T. Ick, W. M. Haskell, Q, Booth, W. B. Mitchell, and B. P. Orosbie, secretary. Mr O. T. Ick was voted to the chair, and read the resolution of the meeting of clergy and laity held last week at the Oity Council Chambers, viz., “ That a committee be appointed to consider the arrangement on which a “Charity Sunday ” special collection can be established, and report at a subsequent meeting.” All the committee elected were present, except Mr H. W. Packer, from whom an apology was received, he being out of town. After a general discussion, the following three resolutions were proposed by Mr Haskell, seconded by the Bev. O. Fraser, and carried unanimously : (1) ” That the clergy of all denominations be requested to set apart Sunday, September 24tb, 1882, as the most suitable day in this year for a special charity collection in all the churches of Christchurch and the suburbs. ”

(2) “That all the clergy be requested to preach on that occasion a special charity sermon, or to take such other steps as they may think fit, for making such a special collection (or collections) in their respective churches.” (3) “ That for this year the collections be devoted to the purposes of the Benevolent Association, but that a scheme be drawn up for future years with the object of including any other charitable association which may be thought deserving.” Bev. H. Watson moved, seconded by Mr Mitchell—“ That a committee be appointed to draw up a constitution and rules to submit to the annual general meeting (first Monday in April.” Carried unanimously. The committee then adjourned to report at a general meeting of the association and the clergy to be held, by permission, at the Oity Council Chambers on Monday next, at two o’clock.
