NEW ZEALAND.
[PHB PRESS association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, August 25. The inquest on St. Andrew’s Ohuroh fire was held yesterday, and occupied the whole day, the jury retiring at about ten o’clock last night. The following verdict was returned :—“ The Scotch kirk was ruthlessly set fire to on the morning of tbe 19th of August, but the evidence is not sufficient to implicate any person or persons.” The following rider was added to it:—" The jnry recommend the authorities to offer a reward for any evidence that would lend to the conviction of the perpetrators, and that a free pardon be granted to an accomplice giving such evidence.”
At five a.m. this morning the Stratford Hotel was burnt down, but moat of the furniture was saved. The fire is supposed to have originated in the spirit store under the stairs, and went up the lining to the roof. The building was insured in the Victoria for £SOO, and the stock in the Norwich Union for £250, and the United for £l5O.
