POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.

fßz Tbibqbaph.J

[TBOM THK "PBBBB."] WELLINGTON, August 22. You will have observed from your Parliamentary report the House sat all night, as I warned you in my last telegram yesterday evening (or rather early this morning) was likely to be the oase, the adjournment not taking plaoe till 8 a.m. to-day, the whole nigh v ; being occupied in factious obstruction to the sohedules of the Three Million Loan Bill. The whole affair was very discreditable, and affords another proof that it is almoot hopeless to look for any real work being done this session. A very stupid thing was done, moreover, in cutting down the £350,000 as against the Lumsden-Marora Railway to £l. This had the effeot not only of praotioally outting out that line altogether, for a vote of £1 for a new railway would, I fear, go a very little way; but it also left the schedule deficient by £34 999, no substitute being provided for the exoised work. The result is that the Bill will either have to be re-oommitted, in which case the whole obstruction will almost certainly be renewed, or else the sohedule will have to be amended on a message from the Governor. The latter is understood to be the more probable oouise, but a final decision has not yet been arrived at. la consequenoe of the protraoted sitting, the House did not meet this afternoon, but resumed this evening, when an utterly idle debate occurred on the motion to commit the Native Eeserves Bill, which at length was carried by a majority of 7, another Ministerial orisis being thus averted. These crises are becomir g monotonous. I hear that two of the Royal Commissioners to report on the best route of the South Island main trunk line will probably be Mr Ormond and Oaptain Russell. 1 am told these names have been suggested to Nelson members, who strongly approve them. Nothing has transpired as to the third Commissioner.

It is rumored that the public petitions | committee will recommend that Detective Farrell be reinstated in his former position, bat it is expeoted that this recommendation will not be looked on very favorably at headquarters. With reference to the South Island Trunk Railway Commission, I ought to add that the names I quoted are not in any sense officially known, but are merely named in lobby gossip. The only offioial information on the subject is that the matter is not decided, and will not be until the recess. It is anticipated that Mr Johnston's steam communication resolution will most likely be agreed to, but I fear very few other measures will get " through the mill. ' Members say on all hands that they will not stop here after the first weok in Septomber. There are only sevea more sitting dayß in this month, and the Paper h&s hardly been even abbreviated. From what I can learn as to the probabilities, I am disposed to believe that the Bankruptcy Bill does not stand muoh chanoe of coming up for discussion at all, but will be circuluted and left to be " thought over" duriDg the recess. I fanoy the Government Life Insurance, Law Practitioners, Fisheries, Aliens, Member*' Expenses, Education Districts, Licensing Committee Aot Amendment, National Inouranoo, Electrio Light, Affirmation, and other Bills will all be dropped. The fate of the Lind Bill and Looal Government Bills is aliil uncertain. The House is likely to be engaged most of the night in committee on the three Native Bill?.
