THE EGYPTIAN WAR.

SIGNING OF THB CANAL PROTOCOL.

PBELIMINABY SKIBMISH.

[BBUTEB'S TELE3BAMB.] ALEXANDRIA, August 20. The British fleet and transports whioh left here yesterday did not stop at Aboukir, but passed on and proceeded to Port Said. On arrival there a body of Bailors was landed, and all the Natives in the place were disarmed. No resistance was offered by the latter. This rnse having been successfully accomplished, it is now probable that the fleet and transports will proceed today to Aboukir, and forthwith commence an assault on the forts these.

All traffic through the Suez Canal has been temporarily stopped by order of Sir Garnet Welseley.

It ia now known that the cannonade which was heard yesterday in the direction of the Mahmoudieh Canal was the outcome of a skirmish which occurred between General Hamley’s advanced guard and Arabi’s outposts beyond Kafradowar. The action was not of a serious character, and the casualties on either side were slight. [“ Aon ” Spboiai,.] LONDON, August 20, 8 a.m. The Envoys at the Conference have signed the canal protocol, and a naval commission will meet at Port Said to execute it. A short skirmish between the outposts occurred at Ramleh this afternoon. The enemy attacked steadily, but the British, who were unprepared, withdrew. The ironclad railway train was then despatched down the line, and cannonaded the enemy severely. Tradesmen are returning to Cairo.
