Mary Anna Jeffary applied to the polio? court for a protection order to shield bar from the drunkenness and the continued cruelty of her husband, George Jeffery. Mrs Jeffery stated her husband, George Jeffery, formerly a detective officer, was not now in Auckland. She had suffered great deal through his brutality and intemperate habits. She was afraid to live with him, and left him. eight weeks ago. He was continually and frequently beating her, he had been drinking for years, and had injured her nose with ft billet of wood, and had knocked her down, stairs, and kept her cut in the cold for hours. She had never given him occasion for drinking. She had four children, aged seven, five, three and two years. She wished for the protection of the Court, and the exclusive custody of the children. Order granted. The Japanese war ship Tsububs arrived tonight from Hobart, having experienced head' winds all the way. She intended to have gone to Wellington, but the wind preventing, came on to Auckland. Her future movements are not yet known. A committee cf the Auckland Racing Chub have framed a programme for the Spring, Summer and Autumn Meetings, and £3095 will be given away in prize money at the three meetings, being distributed as follows;-™ £4OO to Spring, £2400 to Summer, and £1095 to the Autumn. DUNEDIN, August 18. Sergeant Moore, who has been transferred from Palmerston South to Christchurch, has been presented by the inhabitants with an address and a geld medal, and his wife with a purse of twenty guineas as a mark of esteem. The “Star’s” Eaeftoa correspondent graphs that it is rumored there that the directors of the Keep it Dark mine threaten to bring an action against the “ Otago Witness” for comments on the mine management. The matter of the Linden rival Licensing Committees came before the Supreme Court to day. Mr Ormond Butler, who was granted a license by the three commissioners elected by the ratepayers, bat refured it by the commissioners appointed by the Governor, applied that tho licensing clerk ohoald _ show cause why ho should not issue the license, rho Judge granted the application, saying the construction of the Act was somewhat doubtful. , _ . . , ~ At a meeting of the Angiers Society, held to-night, to consider the Fisheries Bill, the following amendments were recommended — 1. That no pen on whatever bo allo wed to fish except during the season specified, even though he bo the owner of tho water. 2. That tho license fee be one guinea for each rod in each coolimatisation district, and that no colonial licenses be issued, owing to the great iniu-tico to societies which have paid for the introduction of fish. 3. That all foes and fines be tho property of the Acclimatisation Society of tho district in which the offence occurs.
