NAPIER, August 17. At a meeting of the Baaing Club to-night a proposal was made to wind up the club, but it was decided to keep it in existence, though probably no race meeting will be held this year. Officers were appointed, with power to arrange for an autumn meeting, if a course could be obtamed. The operations of the club lor the year showed a loss. The assets were small. This was ascribed to the want of a permanent course. The Jockey Club will hold a Boxing Day Meeting this year. For the first time the weather has cleared up after several days of intermittent rain and cold winds. The loss of lambs will be considerable, though on all the coast runs lambing was over before the rain came. Feed too is plentiful, but watery. No floods are reported, the mouths of the rivers having been kept open, and the sea being calm.
WELLINGTON, August 17.
At a meeting of the City Council to-night, a letter from Dr, Gillon, the hospital surgeon, was read, in which he demanded an immediate and full enqniry into charges alleged to have been made against him at a meeting of the hospital committee. The nature of these charges has not transpired, but a speech made in the Council indicates that they affect the management of the staff and not that of the patients. Dr. Gillon also states in fcis letter that the nurses complain of being overworked and underpaid. Tno Council acknowledged the necessity for sifting the matter, and a committee consisting of the whole Council will hold an enquiry on Monday next. The rainfall this month has been very heavy, registering 671 inches for the seventeen days. Last year for the whole month it was 6.763 inches, and the average for August in the previous seventeen years was 5.326 inches.

The enquiry into the fire at Lyle’s watch* maker’s shop last Saturday commenced this morning, and was subsequently adjourned till Wednesday next. DUNEDIN, August 17. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Hardware Company held to-day, the report showed that the gross profits for the post year had been £11,280, from which had to be deducted for expenses, interest, bad debts, and sums written of! leaseholds, £6105, leaving a balance of £3308. Of this it was proposed to pay a dividend of 10 per cent., absorbing £3019, and to carry £259 forward. The report was adopted. There is considerable feeling over the fact that at the University ceremonial last night the Chancellor of the New Zealand University alone had a hand in it, in accordance with regulations passed at last Senate. It is considered strange that the Chancellor of tbe Otago University should have no part in capping students who graduated thereat. Last night the students gave three cheers for the Otago Chancellor, which is taken as a mark of the sore feeling on the subject. The boy Harvey was wrongly reported to have had his leg broken at football, Ine accident occurred whilst jumping. Lyon Metz, pawnbroker, aged sixty, fell down dead this evening. The cause is heart disease. Dunning and Wallace’s Opera Company will visit Dunedin at Christmas. The ” Twelve Bachelors” and 11 Boccacio” are the hew operas in their repertoire.
At the Police Court a man whom a George street tradesman had employed to blow m, trumpet to attract custom was proceeded against for infringing the by-laws, but the magistrate held that the letter of the law had npt been broken though the spirit had, and dismissed the case.
INVERCARGILL, August 17.
Mr McKerrow, the Surveyor-General, writing with reference to the question of disputed street alignments here, states that there can be no shifting by subsequent survey of original boundaries, as given to the land purchasers by the Crown. Mr D. O. W. McArthur, 0.E., has communicated with the Borough Council in reference to a proposal by a company, of which ha is representative, offering to bring in a water supply from Dnnedale Creek for Invercargill and the surrounding municipalities. If agreed to the works will be completed within two years, and will be open to purchase at valuation by the Corporation at any time.
