RAILWAY MANAGEMENT.
A public meeting, to consider certain matters connected with railway management at Addington, was held at the Freothought Hall last evening at eight o’clock ; Mr S. P. Andrews in the chair.
The Chairman stated the object of the meeting, and read the advertisement convening same. He stated that at that early stage of the proceedings he would not express any opinion, but simply state that there were grievances connected with the railway management which the present meeting wished to see redressed, or endeavor to remove the cause of them. All he sought for in taking the chair was that whatever grievances existed might be inquired into. He would call upon Mr Schultz to lay the ease before the meeting. Mr Sohnltz then stated the grounds that led to his resigning his position as timekeeper at Addington. He also road a letter he had sent to the Minister of Public Works on the matter. His complaint was briefly, that the increase of hands, viz , from 189 to 240, had considerably increased the work of his post, that in addition thereto he was instructed to make a practice of passing through the workshops at 5 and 7 p.m., to carefully examine each building and see that all fires were properly put out, to make snob arrangements as would allow of his posting up the Dunedin time books.
It was unanimously resolved—“ That a copy of the correspondence as read be forwarded to each member of the House of Representatives, with a special request to Messrs Montgomery, White, Holmes, Wynn Williams, Ivesi, B. G. Wright, Fish, and W. M. Green, to bring the matter prominently before the House of Representatives for the purpose of a full investigation.” The Chairman stated that it was possible the Minister for Public Works had never seen the correspondence. Mr A. Hollobon proposed—“ That the aforesaid members be requested to ask for the letters (or a copy thereof) sent by Mr A, D. Smith, locomotive superintendent, to the Minister, in connection with the correspondence as read."
Mr Leach seconded the resolution, which was also carried unanimously.
Mr D, Leach proposed—“ That the meeting adjourn until a reply has been received, of which due notice is to be given, and a meeting called as early as possible, there being other oases pending.” Mr Jones seconded the resolution, which was also carried unanimously. Mr T. Graham proposed—“ That the aforesaid members be advised that it is the opinion of this meeting thatß. Triggs should be brought to answer the charges of misappropriation of the public mr.nay. In canning the building a stable for his horse, and colling it a shed, and falsification of the books at the Magistrate’s Court.” Mr D. Walsh seconded the resolution, which was agreed to. It was agreed that copies of the resolutions be forwarded by the chairman to Wellington. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
