SPORTING NOTES.
OBOM THE "WHUIXT PBESB."]
From the official card of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Olub Handicap, kindly forwarded us by the secretary, Mr F. D. Luckie, we notice that several errors occur in tbe telegraphic aooount published recently that must have orept in in course ( f transmission. In the Handicap Hurdle Be»co the top weight, Lonehand's weight, should read list 121 b, not list Slbs, and Tartar's weight in the same race should read lOst 91bs, not lOst lOlbs. There are a good many animals in all three events that we know little or nothing of, but speaking of the better known animals, Mr J. O, Evett, tho handicapper, appears to have displayed his usual oareful and judicious apportionment of weights. For the Spring Hani dicap we like best Virginia Water, Louie, both by the bye in the same stable, Libeller, Hinemoa, and Amazon. Mischief should be hard to beat in the Flying Handicap, even with 9st up ; whilst Te Whetu or Tartar we fanoy will be very near winning the Handicap Hurdle Race. " Phaeton " ststes that Mr John Smith's Australian bred filly, Lady, who met with such a severe accident while running in the Maiden Plate on Boxing Day lost, has almost completely recovered, and Mr Smith informs me that there is every likelihood of this handsome daughter of The Auk standing a preparation. G-eorge Rowlands, who is now training for Mr Smith, has been treating the team, including Lady, to gentle exercise this week at Ellerslie.
The Spring meeting of the OromwellJockey Olub has been fixed for Oofcober 6th, but tho programme has not yet appeared. The following additional names have been dcoided on by owners of racing stock : —Mr O. O. McGae's br f by Akeake Titoko— Patience; oh fby Presto —May Moon —Mayflower. Mr B. Thorpe's br fby Musket— Lilla Bookh —Mary ; eh c by Presto —Lallo Bookh—Hariosto.
11 Soukar" reports that Mr 0. M. Richards has parted with the three-year-old filly, Last Chance, by Painter, out of the old Sir Heroules mare Ohanoe. The filly is said to have been purohaeed on behalf of a Mr Berry. The figure was £IOO, and she has gone into Sam Powell's hands to be trained for her engagements—Waverley Guineas, MartonBangitikei St. Lsger, and Wanganni Derby. According to " Spectator," Mr Hamilton, of Manutabi, near Patea, has purchased the thoroughbred sire The Goversor, and intends to stand him in that distriot. It will be observed that the non-acoeptoro for the Melbourne Cup include the whole of the New Zealand horses. Mr Bobinson's team shares the same fate in the Sydney Metropolitan Stakes. The Thames Jockey Club's balance sheet shows a credit balance of £276. It has been resolved to offer £SOO added money, to be run for at the summer meeting. " Mr Wilkins' imported Amerioan trotting stallion, Blackwood Abdallah, is, we hear, on the private sale list. This horse was recently under offer to Mr Andrew Town, but tne sale fell through. Berlin, Mr Wilkins' first imported Amerioan trotting stallion, is announoed to stand the season at Holmwood. A telegram in the " Australasian" gives the result of the Goodwood Stakes as follows: Lord Vivian's oh c Fortissimo, first; Mr B. Jardine's two animals, Beveller and Sebean, second and third. Twenty-eight horses have been nominated for the Campbelltown Steeplechase in Tasmania. The list inoludes Clarence. King Queil, it is said, will not raoe this season, as Mr Horsfall intends putting the game little son of the great Yattcndon to the stmd. The Auckland papers state that Mr Kerr'B trotting importation as being the largest and most valuable lot of trotting horses that have ever been imported into Australasia. AUSTRALIA It is reported, says "Augur," that the opposition to Segenhoe has been caused by the presumed superiority of Heels, who one morning during last week galloped with the Derby favorite, and apparently was mistress of the situation. There may, however, be a different result when Yeomans gets into the saddle. I remember that many of us who saw the work last season imagined Morpeth was Ssgenhoe's superior, until he settled the question in tho last gallop they had prior to the Maribyrnong Plate. Mr B. J. Jones announced that he will give a gold trophy of the value of 100 sovs. to the winner of the Sydney Tattersall's Cup. Mr John Coldham's Graisdale stud is to be formed into a company, and then disposed of by art union. The principal prize will be the stallion St. Albano, whose stook have run so well in New Zealand ond Tasmania. Mr Byron Moore has the management of the affair. It is intended that after Motea (Darebin's brother) has bad *. season at the stud to put him into work again with the idea of raoing him.
Captain Osborne's oolts, Wheatear and Sir Oliver, met with a severe accident on the Band wick training ground a fortnight ago, while working together. The latter swerved, and oarrying Wheatear with him, both crushed through the fence and fell heavily, both getting their legs badly cut. Fears are entertained that Wheatear will never race again. Gordon, who was riding Wheatear. had his leg broken, and the other boy was also seriously injured. Mr Tow n's mare Amethyst, dam o F Sapphire gave birth to a grand foal on July 15th, This youngster will therefore be thrown out of his two and three-year-old engagements and weight for age raoes, Mr L. L. Smith's b o Liberator, 3 years, by Irish King out of Mobile, oarrying Bst 91b, won the Handicap Flat Baoe of one mile at the Viotoria Kaoing Club winter meeting; Saandal, 4jr«, 7»t 51b, obtained second plaoe 5 and Respite, 4yrs, Bst 111 b, was third. Twelve others ran. By this viotory Liberator incurs a nenalty of 51b for the Hawkesbury Handicap, Metropolitan and Melbourne Cup.
