DRAINAGE BOARD.

Monday/, August 14. The ordinary meeting of the Ohristohurch District Drainage Board was held at 2 30 pjn. Present —Messrs It. Harper (chairman), A. Dunbar, A. Ashwortb, W. Yinoont, W. F. Hubbard, and J. E. Parker. The engineer's report was read as follows : 1. In the matter of the account for repairs to the streets presented for payment by the City Council, I am informed by the city surveyor that the work charged for was reducing and levelling down the earth and road metal on the top of the trench, whioh is often left high by the contractors, bo that it may subside with the traffic to the right level. This is no doubt a correct statement of the case. 2. It will be necessary to lay down chains of pipes in Barbadoes street from Lewer High street to St. Asaph street to facilitate flushing from the flushing tank, aa if this is not done the pipe musti be flushed from a oart, which should be avoided where possible. 3. Mr John Knight s agreement to clear drains in B.S. 1692, 7198, 5851, £839, 6356, a total length of 74 chains, should be

renewed for one year, and be offers to dotho work for two shillings per chain, whioh isaDous tbe average priee paid for the drains in tns Heathcote district. 4. Mr Bayman bas erected a house over Jackson's Creek, on theiwfrt «oe and oorner of Selwyn street lonth. It is duus on brick walla, Sf t6in apart, leaving that space for watfr*ay. 5. Mr J. Stinson ideolraeß to lay the pipe] in Fonnd road from ham street to Windmill read under his contract. 6. In the case of the complaints made by Mr Moling of stagnant water in the dram in front of hiß house, permission was given him to mil in the upper part of this watercourse. He has done bo to » certain extent, leaving the extreme upper end unfilled, and, of course, water stagnates in this part. Mr MaliDg is in fault in fillisg the drain in in this manner, as he could easily have foreseen the result; the upper part is on a Bection owned by Mr B. M. Morten. 7. I would recommend that the license of Mr Soanes to make connections with the sewers bo renewed, as it expires on the 25th. 8 Authority is required for the purchase of five brass taps for artesian wells in flushing tanks. 9. The flame and carrier drain at_ Sandhills 1b completed, and will be tried with the pumps in a few days. In connection with the distribution of the Bewage, it will be necessary to employ a max to look after the flow, and direct it as required.-(Signed), C. Napibk Bell, Engineer. The clauses of the report were discussed seriatim. On olause 1, Mr Hubbard moved—" That the account of the Oity Council be paid, and the amount deducted from the sum payable under Stinson's oontraot."

Mr Dunbar eeoonded the motion, which was carried.
