STEEPLECHASES.

Winter, and 8. Saunders : Stewards, Messrs H. T. Winter, M. Stitt, S. Saunders, W. B. Denshire, B. Q. Crisp, W. Simpson, and J. C. Bell. The steeplechase* under the auspices of the Ashburton Hunt Club took place yesterday on the racecourse. The weather was gloriously fine, and this, combined with the attraction* of a liberal programme and a fair number of entries for each event, induced a large number of the general public and tho (porting fraternity to put in an appearance on the racecourse. Hobbe and Goodwin, of Ohriatohurob, were on the ground with their totaliaator, and during the day a considerable sum was invested in this way. The principal shops and offices in tho town were closed at noon, and this made a very material increase in the attendance. The various events on the programme passed off satisfactorily, and the meeting altogether was a great success. In the evening a number of members of the Hunt Club, together with many friends, dined at Quill’s Hotel, and brought their meeting to a close in a very enjoyable manner, Subjoined are details of the various race* :

Maiden Steeplechase, for a piece of Plate, value 10 sovs; weight for age ; nomination, 1 sov ; for horses that have never started in an advertised race, other than hack races. One mile and a half. Belting even on Brenda and Muscat. The quartette were sent away to a good start, but Brenda immediately assumed the lead, closely followed by Muscat, with Charlie third, and Peter in tho roar. The horses went in this order to the double jump, where Muscat fell and was out of the race. At the last fence Charlie was close on to the heel* of Brenda, but once over the hurdle Brenda proved too fleet for her immediate attendant, and Mr Crawley landed bis mare a winner with a couple of lengths to spare. Time — 3 min. 20seo.

The Hunt Club Cup (Handicap), value 15 sova; nomination, 1 sov; acceptance, 1 gov, to go to the second horse. Two miles. Mr J. Corbett’s hr g Captain, 5 yra, list 71b (Owner) 1 Dr. Bess’ b g Muscat, 5 yrs, Hat 51b (Mr J. Warner) 2 Mr E. D. Pnllar’s b g Laghmor, aged 12st 71b (Mr Kelley) 3 Mr F. Eaundcrs’ b g Pirate, 5 yrs, list 71b (Mr E. Saunders) 0 Mr J. Hay’s b m Pnsiy, 5 yrs, list (Mr Hayes) 0 Mr A. Meharry’s hr m Lady Gladys, 4 yrs, 10at (Mr Meharry) 0 Betting—Even on Pirate, 3 to 2 against Captain, 5 to 1 against the remainder. _ Laghmor and Pirate’went away with the load at a great pace to and over the first fence, Pussy and Lady Gladys baulking. At the next jump Laghmor refused, and Pirate went away with a good lead. This was maintained to the fence past the stand, where Laghmor fell. The race was then left with Oantain and Muscat to the double jump, where Muscat fell, and Captain won in a canter. Warner regained his saddle in time to come in and secure second place, Laghmor being third, and the other* nowhere. Time, 4min 55secs.

Farmers' Steeplechase (Handicap), fora piece of plate, value 10 sovs; nomination. 10a 63 ; acceptance, 10s 6d. One mile and half. The handicap will be declared immediately after the preceding race has been run. Mr E. Saunders’ b g Pirate, 5 yrs (Owner) 1 Mr J. L. Crawley’s blk m Brenda, 5 yrs (Owner) 2 Mr M. C. Winter’s b g Eonaer, aged (Mr Warner) 3 Mr M. Friedlander’a Moltke, Mr Pullar’s Laghmor, Mr Meharry’s Lady Gladys, and Mr Brown’s Schoolboy also ran Betting—3 to 2 agst Laghmor, 2 to 1 agst Pirate and Brenda,

Laghmor, Brenda, and Moltke led away at the start. Pirate being pulled back last. Past the stand, and to the next fence, this position was maintained, when Moltke fell, and Laghmor and Brenda led to the double. Here Brenda baulked, and Pirate went through and name up with Laghmor. Both struck the next fence, and Laghmor fell. Pirate and Brenda then had the run in to themselves, the former winning a capital race by a length. Time—3min 23jeo. Tally- Ho Cup (Handicap), value 10 sovs; nomination, 10a 6d; acceptance, 10a 6d; horses to be ridden by members who have never previously ridden in an advertised race. Cine mile and a half. The handicap will be declared immediately after the preceding race has been run. Mr J. Corbett’s br g Captain, 6 yrs (Mr Pearce) 1 Mr W. G. ChianalTs g g Grey Streak, 6 yrs (Owner) 2 Mr W. P. Allan’s br g Maniac, aged (Owner) 3 Mr H. T. Winter’s oh g Charlie, 5 yrs (Mr A. Pooka) 0 Mr W. Brown’s b g Schoolboy, 5 yra ... 0 Betting—Even money on Charlie and Captain.

Captain and Grey Streak led the way past the stand. Maniac fell at the first fence, and at the next jump Grey Streak came to grief, but Mr (Jhisnall held bis horse so well that ho lost but little ground. Charlie fell at the second jump from home, and the race lay between Grey Streak and Captain, the latter finally coming in an easy winner. The Oomoletion Steeplechase Handicap was won by Mr J. Corbett’s Captain, Bouser second. Three ran. And at the conclusion of this event a drag hunt took place round the course.
