BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the South Waimakarirl Board of Conservators was held at the Board’e offices, Hereford street, at 2 p.m. this day. Present —Messrs F. Jones (chairman), H. Atkinson, W. Attwood, J. L, Wilson, and T. 8. Lambert, The works committee reported that the proposed work at Chaney’s corner has been partly carried out. A large groin 60£t wide had bean erected along the face of the bank, projecting 63ft into the stream. Its height from the bed of the river was 18ft. Thirty or forty loads of boulders would be placed on the top for ballast. It was thought advisable to wait till after the next fresh before proceeding any further, in order that the balance of the money voted for this work might be expended in erecting a groin lower down the river, It was thought likely that the large groin might so divert the stream as to form a course across the shingle bank towards the bridge. Should this reeult, it would ensure the safety of the bank without any other largo works except planting. The planting operations at the lower and upper works were nearly completed. The report was received and adopted, the work of ballasting being ordered to be doao forthwith.

A report was road from the overseer, stating that the cost of the work already done to the groin at Chaney’s corner was nearly £59 10s. The materials employed were seventy-five loads of manuka, equal to 4500 bundles ; two loads of willows, and 12owt of wire.

The secretary was Instructed to write to certain tenants whoso rents are in arrears, asking for immediate payment. The Secretary reported that the amount of rates unpaid for 1881 amounted to £328 17s 4d, and it was decided that the various local bodies be written to on the subject. The Bank debt was stated to ba £357 12 1 Id. Letters were read :

From the Little Hive? Road Board, forwarding account of the amount of rates, £lO 9b sd, collected during the year, and stating that the per-centage allowed for collection did not cover cost of printing, &•»., and that the Board declined to pay from its own funds for the purpose. A new form of collecting book and advertisements had been adopted for the ensuing year, with a view to obviate the greater portion of the cost. Tiia Board expressed itself satisfied with the letter.

From the Avon Road Board, referring the Board of Conservators to the tenants of the various reserves for permission to remove manuka scrub.

The Chairman stated this had already been done.-

From the Christchurch City Council enclosing a statement showing the amounts paid to the Board on account of rates 1880 (£1824 17a 8d), lees £4 Os 61 error), and suggesting that the rolls should be closed.

It was resolved—“ That the Avon, Bio. carton, and Templet n Road Boards be informed that they will be allowed to take shingle from the river bed on paying a royalty of 2d per load.” Mr Atkinson moved—“ That a charge of 3d per yard for boulders and gravel and 61 per yard for sand be made to parsons carting same from the river bed.” Mr J.
