August 4.
Major-General Sir Archibald Alison, in command of a large force of British troops, to-day made a reconnoiasance of Arabi’s position. The information previously received that Arabi had withdrawn from Kafradowar to Damanahur, a place on the railway between Alexandria and Cairo, and 38 miles from this city, was fully confirmed by the reconnoiasance. Arabi’s outposts were seen some distance from Damanahur, and rumors of an alarming character have been current that it was Arabia intention to make a surprise attack upon Alexandria. The reconnoiasance of Sir Archibald Alison proves the rumor to have been devoid of truth, and that the fears of an attack were groundless. Baron Do Lesseps, on behalf of the Canal Company, has made a vigorous protest to Admiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour against the passage of H.M.S.
