A new steamer for the Thames and Te Aroha trade war launched to day. 1 A' petition of ratepayers of the Karangahape district, praying for union with the city, was forwarded to Wellington. The Harbor Board have inspected the site of the proposed reclamation on the North Shore which was applied for by the Colonial Sugar Beflning Company for refining works, with a view to deciding as to the terms of the upset rental and length of lease. The reclamation embraces over four acres of the foreshore. ’

He was arrested on a charge of horse stealing, and to-day was committed for trial at the Supreme Court. HOKITIKA, August 3 In the Ross Gold Mining Company's claim gold was struck in the shaft at a level of 140 feet, showing excellent prospects. DUNEDIN, August 3. Two boys, aged thirteen and fourteen respectively, were oonvioted to-day at the Police Court of robberies, in one case" of having broken into* coffee house, and in another with - having stolen tools from a private house. There was a third boy, aged eleven, who i turned Queen's evidenoe. The Resident Magistrate said he soarcely knew what to do with such young criminals, and postponed his deoisiou till Tuesday. The ■ skeleton of a man was found a few days ago in the Olutha River, but the remains were entirely beyond identification. They may be those of a man drowned at Cromwell in 1875. Since then three men have mysteriously disappeared from the same neighborhood, but it is not known whether drowned or not. '

The interminable case of Connor v Mack ay, which has been goinft on since 1878, hai been before the Supreme Court the last three days. Connor, the plaintiff, was in the witness box over twenty hours. The jury gave a verdiot in plaintiff's favor. The amount involved in the pre 3ent action was about £20,000. Numerous points of law were raised on which tc sat aside the judgment, and these will be further argued. » ' ! TIM ABU, August 3.
