Sailed, this afternoon—The Union Company’s steamship Rotorua, for the Bluff. Messrs C. S. Ross and Co. report that at their sale of kauri pine to-day hewn logs realised 14s per 100 ft., and sawn flitches 17s. The market is weakening. SYDNEY, August 1. The death is announced of Mr Henry Kendall, the well known poet and author, from phthisis, aged 40. NEW ZEALAND. (PUB PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, August 1. Bishop Selwyn arrived at Rusaoll yesterday, and had a conference with Commodore Krskine. The Bishop leaves for Norfolk Island to-morrow in the Southern Cross, accompanied by Archdeacon Clark and Mr Wright. The Nelson sailed for Sydney via Norfolk Island. At the ball given to the Commodore and officers Bishop Selwyn was present. The bridge over the Waipa, Whatiwbatihoe, is finished. At the ceremony of pile-driving Tawbiao incurred a debt of £2l for drink, which he expected the Government to pay. The publican will probably sue his Majesty for the amount.

At the inquest at the gaol on John Pepper a verdict of “ Died from natural causes ” was returned. The prisoner was undergoing a sentence of eiz months for larceny. Denis Heffsrnen was charged at tho Police Court to-day with being accessory to burning two stacks of barley, with the intent to defraud the New Zealand Insurance Company. He was remanded till Friday. DUNEDIN, August X. Haxton and Beattie, who have patented the new harrow which has been introduced in Australia and America, have just perfected a steam driven machine far the mana feature of them. This was tried to-day for the first time and did excellent work. It will also be patented. They will in future make harrows of steel. The machine will enable a firm to turn out twenty times as much work as before.

Tho City Council to-night pasted a resolution approving of the Harbor Board Bill, and requesting the Mayor to use his efforts to further its passage in the House. A trial trip was made to-day of the new steamer for the Olutha River, to connect with the railway. She was built at Home, and put together here, and ithe trip was made in the harbor. Unfortunately some small hitch occurred with the machinery, the result being that steam had to be blown off, and the boat brought to anchor half way down. There wore about sixty gentlemen on board, and they fumed and fretted for nearly two hours, till the Maori came along and towed them to Port Chalmers. There lunch had been prepared at one o’clock, but the party did not arrive till about four, consequently the speechifying was out short. The boat has been constructed to carry cargo on the lightest draught possible. Moses Akerman Price, formerly secretary to a lodge of Druids, has been remanded on a charge of embezzling £2 19s from the society. At the Police Court to-day the master of the Industrial School said unless the authorities made a stand there would scon bo a thousand children thrown on the State for support.
