ALLEGED ARSON.

DUNBDIN, July 31
A fire was discovered early yesterday morning in the cellar of Thomas McGill, draper, of the Arcade. A constable first saw the fire, whilst McG-ill, who was on the premises, was not cognisant of it. With aßßistanoe the fire was soon extinguished. The stock, &0., is insured for £2OOO, equally divided in the New Zealand and National companies. McGill states the value cf his stock ranges between £I9OO and- £2IOO. A quantity of oiled wrappings, rags, &0,, were discovered on fire in suoh a position as led the police to arrest McGill.
Thomas McGill was oharged at the Polios Oonrt to-day with arson, but was remanded on bail till Friday. He arrived on Tuesday only from the Home country, and has now a large quantity of drapery on the way out. He was standing at the door yesterday morning when first seen by a constable, and ai the latter approached McGill ran up to him stating his plaoe was on fire.
