At a meeting of shareholders of the Coffee Palace Company, a resolution was carried that the building as originally proposed be carried out if 16,500 shares be subscribed in one month, otherwise the oompany be wound up. Lieutenant Drake, of the Nelson, while taking a walk in the bush towards Flagstaff Hill, came upon the body of a man with his throat out, the knife being still grasped in his hand. He immediately gave information, and the Eeimon. who were ashore proceeded and brought the body to Flood's hotel. It was identified as the remains of Daniel Mnnn, brother of David Munn, the well-known jookey. He arrived from a trip to Auckland by the Glenelg last Tuesday, and it was r«marked he seemed strange in his manner, like one who had been drinking heavily. Sinoe his arrival nothing had been seen of him till his body was found. An inquest was held, and a verdict returned that he committed suicide while in a state of temporary insanity. The body found in the harbor on Saturday has been identified as that of John Pettit, lately storekeeper at Opotiki. He was in Auckland on the 14th inat., and in the evening went down the wharf to board a vessel. The night was stormy, and he is believed to have fallen ovor the wharf. The verdiot of the jury was "Found drowned." An explosion cf gas took place in Goodson's arcade through the rats gnawing the gaspipes. The damage was not serious.

Winiata's execution has been fixed for Friday. An indignation meeting of settlers has been held at Waiuku re Waiuka and Pukekohe railway proposals not being oarried out. It is stated that the Government sold the 'and in the district on false pretences, promises being held out of a canal to Awaroa. Creek, and a tramway, whioh were never fulfilled. The unimproved land was then sold at prices whioh could not be got to-day. WELLINGTON, July 31

It is understood that, at the request of the Government, Mr W. Seed has relinquished his intention of retiring from his position of Secretary and Inspector of Customs to assume the managership of the Wellington Trust and Loan Company, and that he will, therefore, continue as permanent head of the Customs Department. The vital statistics for July were :—Births, 94; deaths, 27; marriages, 19. The Patone railway station was broken into early this morning. Nothing, however, was stolen.

GREYMOUTH, July 31

The customs duties collected daring the present month were £2621. The amount in the corresponding month for 1881 was £3322. Beer duty, £39 j gold duty, £1463. Letters regarding the assay and sale of about 10 tons of antimony ore sent home to be tested have been received from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Co. The following particulars are extracted from the letters :—" The ore was assayed by Johnson, Matthey and Co., Hatton Gardon, London, E. 0., who give the following as the result: —Produce of antimony,4l.s per cent.; produce of gold, 2 900 ounoes per ton of 20cwt. of ore." Having been requested to test the begs and any mullock adhering to them from the stone, they burnt the bags and assayed the remains. Produce of gold, 1.800 ouDoes per ton of SOowts. It is now bolievad that the words " net result eleven," cabled, must mean net result 111 b, per ton. The ore was sold after assay, and the aooount sales will not be to hand before the middle of August

TIMARU, July 31

There were six marriages, thirty-one births, and eight deatht registered in Timaru daring the month of July.

The Customs revenue for the month was £I7OB 15s, as against £2087 19j lid for the corresponding! month of last year. Denis Heffernan, a farmer, was today arrested for counselling and abetting the burning of three stacks of grain belonging to himself, last week. They were insured in the Royal office. At a well-attended public meeting to-night, a oommittoe was appointed to collect subscriptions for the persecuted Russian Jews. About £SO was oolleoted in the room.

Shares in the Picton Goal Company are being rapidly taken up here, and the samples of the coal forwarded have been greatly admired.

OAMARU, July 31

The vital statistics for Oamaru for July were—Births, 48; deaths, 11; marriages, 5. A new grand stand is to be erected at the Oamaru raoecourse at a cost of £ISOO.

DUNEDIN, July 31.

The (Northern express was detained for an hour and a half this morning by a slip of earth near Parakanui, just before reaching the Waitati cliffs. All the other trains to-day ran to time. At Jji<rrence the fljods were the heaviest ever known. In Rose place there was 2ft. of water.

The Customs revenue this month was £42,083.

The body of a fisherman named Kerkreee has been found in Lake Waihola. He had been fishing, and the boat was some time ago found bottom upwards. It is believed that his death was accidental.

The Union Steamship Company have resold the old " Diily Times " office, near the railway station, for £l4 000, over £2OOO more than they gave for it two yoars ago. The rate is at £170,000 per acre, or £173 per foot frontage.
