A oable message received from Licegie and Co., Sydney, states that Hayes hag at last escaped the hands of justice, and that every endeavor to hold him and forward him from Adelaide to Auckland proved fruitless. Tee Court ordered his discharge from custody under a writ of habeas corpus. In a recent cable message his assets were given as £I4OO odd, and the liabilities £685. The liabilities nearly amounted to £I4OO, and the assets to £605, which were found on him when arrested.

Now that Winiata's fate has been definitely settled, it may be stated that he has con'cased to several persons having pcrpatratsd the murder of Packer.

The gill Sarah Johnson, of Cambridge, whose infant was fonnd buried in a garden at Cambridge, has been arrested on a charge of concealment of birth.

At the Supreme Court to-day the case of McLood v Reovea waa heard. It arose out of the Dunedin Industrial Exhibition, MoLeod, an exhibitor, having been given in charge for larceny of wine. The charge waa dismissed. MoLeod cued for damages, but was nonsuited, but was granted a new trial, and now again sued for £2OOO damages. Affer two hour*' consultation, the jury found a verdiot fox 40s, which carries coats. A nonsuit point was reserved and will be argued in banco. At the Polioe Court a man named Knight was charged with stealing certain goods from the household of a man named Karton, at Timaru. Knight boarded with Karlon, who ill treated his wife, and Mrs Kirton and the children left Karton and came to Dunedin with Knight, bringing some of the household goods with them. I'he .Resident Magistrate told accused he had acted like a foci, and might have got himself into serious trouble. However, tho case would be dismissed. Constable Hilliard, of Yictoria, has returned without having learned anything to show that the man Forbes, supposed to have been murdered at Sla well, was ever in New Zealand.

Mr and Mrs Callander, of tho Taieri, who arrived here in the first ship in 1848, have just celebrated their golden wedding. INVEROABGILL, July 27.
