St. Bcnediot's Church, Newton, ereotad by the Order of Benedictines, was formally opened and consecrated to- day for worship. The churoh was crowded, there being 2000 present. Bishop Bed wood, of Wellington, preached. In the course cf his sermon he made a fierce onslaught on the eeoular education syßtem. He said in twenty years' herce the little pagans who were the outcome cf it would be our rulers, or premiers, cabinet ministers and legislators, without hope and without God. Jle learned that of 1550 Catholio ohildren in Auckland only 400 attended Catholio schools. He hoped t'hou they got their new Bißhop they would join the Christian army, Rnd co-operate with the good Benedictine Fathers in getting schools establiehed where Catholio parents could have the morals and faith of their children protected. Farmer's Mass was rendered by the orchestra, 120 strong. The offertory was £412 at the morning service. The churoh \ cost £7OOO, and will take £3OOO additional to complete it. Father O'Sullivan, Superior of Benedictines, presented Professor Catl Schmidt, leader of the orchestra, with a gold mounted baton, as a souvenir of the oonseoration service.
