THE WATER SUPPLY QUESTION.

Wo have boon favored with the following official statement respecting the Wellington water supply, which, in view of the polling to morrow, will no doubt be read with great interest. The figures aa given below, prove most conclusively what we advanced in our article of Saturday, viz., that with an expenditure of over £200,000, as compared with our £60,000, the city of Wellington will derive a sufficient revenue when tho extensions are completed to pay interest, sinking fund and fxpenditure, without taking advantage of their power to strike a special rate. Tho statement is as follows: WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. COST OF WATJSR SUPPLY. £ S. a. Original supply from Karori ... 50.C00 0 0 h'stensiou of ditto ... 30,000 0 0 (This included the lay ins' of water mains and all expenditure incurred for distributing the water supply through the city.) Wainni-o-Mata water supply now in course of construction ... 130,000 0 0 (This sum is estimated to provide everything connected with bringing the supply into town), laying larger mains in the principal streets of the city, and tho purchase of the land necessary for the

works.) Interest on loans and working expenses are at present provided, as shown in the attached estimate of receipts and expenditure for the current year. We have power to levy a epacial rate cf 3d in the £ on the rateable value of all property in the city, but it is hoped that the increased revenuo from the extended supply will render it unnecessary to exercise this power, at nny rate, to its full extent.
