Ha felt that night one of the proudest men in Kew Zealand, because he had been elected by henest and independent men, who hsd nothing to gat from his election. On the contrary, they might have got moro from, electing one of his opponents. Ha felt that he had been elected by tha honest poor men [oheers] —and this Wis what made hits so proud. [Cheers] He had returned to Christchuroh as poor and as friendless as ha left it, still these men stuck to hix. [Cheers.] It showed that the Parlitinent of New Zealand had done justice to the choice of the majority of the electors cf Btanmore. In his case he could not but say that the decision. of Parliament was given quite irrespective <)f any party politics. [Cheers.] He did not think it a place to enter upon politic, the more so as he had spoken to them fully and fearlessly on all the great aubjeo's of the day* The great point was that they in Canterbury should get their fair share of the expenditureof the loan, as he feared that Peter was again to be robbed to pay Paul. Prom the Publia Works Btaternent he found that Canterbury was only to get £IOO,OOO for railway purposes, while Otago was to have £450,000. [Cheers.] He thaaked them for all their kiodncßS to him. [Loud cheers]. The other toasts proposed were "The Chairman," " The Ladies and Mrs Pilliet," " Mr Atenas, the Host," and " The Press."
