f.PKB mass ABHOOIATIOH.J AUCKLAND, July 14.. Tho body of the man who fell off the Eangiriri bridge was recovered. He is believed to be a tramp, about sixty-five years of age. Winiata's oue was on all day, and will not be finished to-day. The City Council refused to permit an Oil, Soap, and Car,dle Company to erect a factory in the oity. The Council has accepted the terms of a oompany to construct the city tramway, subjeot to the terma impoaed by the City Council. Four months is the period allowed for preparing to start upon the work of construction, and eighteen months hence the linos are to be completed and trains running. The Council refused to postpone the question till further intelligence from Messrs Bsid and Grey, Dunedin j or Mr Pearson, of Melbourne.
NEW PLYMOUTH, July 14. A oompany has been formed to lease the the coal mines at Mokau from tho Natives. A number of persons have been on a visit to Mokau to obtain signatures of the Natives to certain deeds for leasing land containing coal seams. This land ia situated about thirtyfive miles up the rUer, and is olose to the river bank, so that the ooal can be conveyed on trucks from the mine to tho landing plsoe without any difficulty or expense in hauling. The ooal can bo traced over a great extent of oountry, and is of first-class quality. The shareholders of the company are at present very sanguine, as their prcspeots are said to bo very good. It is understood that deeds have been signed by all tho Natives, and all arrangements are now completed for taking possession of the land. WELLINGTON, July 14 Captain Pairchild, of tho steamer Stella, which returned to-day from a cruise _ to Southern lighthouses, reported that a birdcatohor named William Wheeler wasmisaing from Preservation Island. It was believed he had oommittcd suicide. He had been very strange of late, and complained of seeing blue devils. There was a thunderstorm over Wellington this afternoon. It is still raining heavily. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, in connection with other firms, to-day sold by auction a large quantity of town and oountry sections. A block at the corner of the Main South road and Strathallan street, consisting of three-eighths of an aore, with the Ship Hotel and some smaller buildings, was sold to Ohas. Green for £l3 500. The majority of tho other sections realised equally satisfactory piiocs. DUNEDIN, July 14. ' Mr Drivor, M.H.E, leaves for Wellington to-morrow. A publio "meeting hold at Roslyn suburb to-night to consider the Licensing Act, came to the resolution to recommend that tho boundaries of the licensing districts and boroughs bo ootorminous, and that the Aot otherwise romain unaltered. Mr Butler, who was granted a publican's license by tho elected licensing committee of three for Linden, tondered his fee to the looal town clerk, but that official refused to reoeive the fco, or to recognise ths committee's authority. Mr Butler will now proceed to apply to tho Supremo Court for mandimus.
A Chinaman was killed at Naseby to-day by a fall of earth in a claim. An alleged case of "lambing down" on the part of a Dunedinhotelkeeper came before the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. The plaintiff asserts that about a fortnight »20 ho came to town with a cheque for £4O odd, and after staying at the Newmarket Hotel for two dayi and a half was informed that he had drunk or " shouted" away all but £l3 of that amount. Ho refused to take Ihis. Then the hotelkeeper offered him £ls, and eventually gave him £2O. The defence will be gone into on a future day. Cuthbert McKellar, agent of the National Bank at Mosgiel, was committed for trial on a ohargo of embezzlcmont. Biil was alio w«d, himself in £4OO, and two sureties in £2CO each.
