[pee fbbss association.] AUCKLAND, July 12. The Taiaroa brings the following items of Fijian news:—A deposit of mineral oil has been discovered at Yanua. Petty larceny is daily oommitted at Levuka. Advices from the Duke of York Island state that a trader named Martin, maddened by drink, threatened to shoot the crew of the outter Loilia, and kept them in terror for some time. At length the master of the Los'.ia, William Stephens, fired off a rifle toward Martin, who got into a boat. Martin fell off the boat and sank. His body was not reoovered. The Orangemen did not hold a procession this year, but a soiree in the Lome street hall. They were addressed by Arohdeacon Maunsell, and the Bevs. A, Raid, Salter, and Potter. Grand Master Goldie presided. There was a good attendance. Commodore Erskine gave an at home on board the Kelson to a large attendance. John Hall took a benefit in the Theatre Royal. It was the best house of the session. The oompany leave by the Botorua for Wellington. At the Harbor Board yesterday a telegram was road from the Lyttelton Board suggesting 00-operation to effect the adoption of Colonel Seratchley's recommendations re defence of our principal ports. It was finally resolved to co-operate with the Lyttalton Board, and to urge the Government to ereot a battery of heavy guns on north head of Queen street wharf.

Arohdeacon Lush died yesterday, aged sixty-five. Thomas Gorman was oommitted for trial for perjury in the Police Court yesterday. At the criminal sessions James Troy, Samuel Daffy and Samuel Bowden were oharged with forgery and uttering. Duffy was sentenced to three years, Bowden to two years, and Troy was disharged. James Wollie, remanded from Napier for horsestealing, was remanded from Auokland to the Thames where the offence was committed.

No bills were found in the oasej of David Johnston, for horse stealing ; James Jaoob Bower, forgery. True bills were found against Ohae. Davidson for bigamy ; Henry Goldsmith, for stealing from a dwelling ; Samuel Bowden, James Troy, and Samuel Duffy, for forgery. The Grand Jury made the following presentment: "That there are numerous bills of indiotment brought before us whioh should be summarily dealt with by the Justices of the Peace of this jadioial district; that in consequence of these needless commitments to the Supreme Court the oountry is put to considerable unnecessary expense ; that in some instanoes the acoused escapes the punishment of a lesser crime whilst being obarged with a greater one." A contractor named Byan has been advertising for a hundred men for road work at Paringa, offeting Us per day, and a free passage from Hokitika. At the South Canterbury Poultry and Pigeon Association's first annual exhibition to day, the number of exhibits was highly satisfactory, while the class of birds was very superior. One Councillor protested against expenditure as illegal.
