fPEB PBBZe ASSOCIATION.! AUCKLAND, June 24. A petition is being signed against the removal of the Native Lauds Court Department from Auckland.
In the police court to day a respectable locking woman named Kelly was charged with bigamy and remanded. It is alleged that she has been married three times, and that all the husbands are alive:
Neil M'Laughlin, the assistant purser of the Manapouri, died just after the ship left, and while being taken up the wharf in a csb by Dr. Goldsboro to the Hospital. No inquest will be held, as death resulted from heart disease and lung disease. He had been confined to bed with severe cold. He came from Scotland with the vessel.
Mr Mills, managing director of [the Union Steamship Company, after arranging various matters in connection with tha steam service here, left by the Manapouri for Wellington. A special freight steamer of large carrying capacity is to be put on st Auckland fur Gisborne, Napier, and the Southern trade, to avoid the detention at ports of the large passenger steamers.
The Mayor and town clerk visited the Nelson to-day. The Commodore received them courteously, and they were shown over the vessel. He stated his stay in port would be about a fortnight, and the vessel would be thrown open to the public. The chairman c£ the Harbor Board has placed the services cf the Board officials and the office records at the disposal of the Commodore. Torpedo practice was engaged in by the Nelson in the harbor. One of the Timaru team of footballers named Craig, in the match with Oamaru yesterday, had his hip dislocated by coming into collision with another player. He had to be taken to the hospital. DUNEDIN, June 25. A Chinaman, who had been missing from Waitahuns, has been found by a constable in a hut on the ranges. He had little or no clothing on, and there were marks on hie neck as if he had attempted suicide. It is understood he was confined in the asylum at Hokitika six years ago. A largo number of teachers have arrived intown to attend the annual conference. INVEEOAEOILL, June 24. The Supreme Court was occupied the whole day with the charge of arson Sf.uh.st W. E. Ford, bootmaker, whose shop in Dee street was found some months ago to be on fire under suspicions surroundings. The jury, after a lengthy deliberation, returned a verdict of “Not guilty, with grave suspicions.” The prisoner was then discharged, the judge observing that in Scottish law the verdict would have been “ Not proven.”
