The Board of Education is determined to consider at an early date a regulation to compel teachers in public schools to send up both good and bad scholars at the standard examination. McLean, the fisherman who erected a fish stall on the ground of the C fffee Palace Company, sues the City Council for £SO damages for pulling his stall down. A permit for erection was given, and subsequently revoked, J. L. Hall's Company opened in the Theatre Boyal in “ Our Girls.” There was a good house. Three applications for orders prohibiting hotelkeepers supplying certain persons with drink were granted to-day. One was solicited by Thomas Maofarlane, accountant in bankruptcy, against his son David Wilkie Macfarlane. H.M.S. Nelson gave an exhibition of the electric light to-night in the harbor. Several thousand citizens turned out to witness it. Commodore Erakine, by his private secretary, has notified the Mayor and Councillors that ho will be happy to receive them to-morrow afternoon. At the inquest on the body of Thomas Trone the jury returned a verdict of “ Accidental death.” The City Council contemplate an introduction of the electric light, using the city water supply »3 a motive power instead of steam. WANGANUI, June 23. James Bodmond and Alexander Douglas Boyd, charged with assaulting Ospt’-in Pope on board the steamer Tni on Sunday last, were brought before the Resident Magistrate, and Boyd was sentenced to a fortnight’s imprisonment, Redmond being discharged. p WELLINGTON, June 23, There are only three cases on tha criminal list for trial at the Wellington circuit sittings, commencing on the 3-d July. They are as follows :—James William Ellis, charged with rape on a girl uuier twelve years of age ; Frank Christie, charged with larceny ; and F. Eliardet, charged with perjury. H.M.S. Miranda left Wellington harbor for Fiji about four o’clock this afternoon. His Excellency tha Governor was a passenger. Captain Gibb and tha crow of tha s.e. Westport arrived from Blenheim, via Picton, this morning. TIMARTJ, June 23. Mr Moses White, accountant to the New Zealand Loan Company, had a narrow escape from being killed this morning. On opening the strong room he discovered it was full of gas. He left the door open for some minutes and then lit a match, when the gis exploded with terrific force, throwing Mr White ten or twelve feet away, smashing a lot of windows, and doing other damage to the offices. Mr White was badly burnt about the face, head, hands, and clothes, and had to bo taken heme. DUNEDIN, June 23. Already four candidates for the next mayoralty are announced, viz , Messrs Thomson, Jitreet, Boss, and Carroll, all councillors. The Kaitanga'a relief fund committee held a meeting to day with reference to statements made by Mr Joyce in the House in moving for a committee of enquiry, and carried a reiolution requesting the Government to aid the appointment of such committee. They will also forward the Government a number of newspaper reports, Ac., to lay before such committee. A man named John Cameron was to-day instantaneously killed at Bullen’s claim iu Wakatipu through some stone falling down a slope upon his skull. Deceased was unmarried, and was an old miner in the district. The Benevolent Institute Commissioners hare arrived, and will begin inquiry on Monday.
