The Melbourne “Argus” of the 6fch inst. says:—Captain Thomas Griffiths, of the ship Hospodar, which hs.s arrived in port from Li Tor pc o', has devoted a considerable portion of bia timo to the study of the question of propulsion by the use of steam direct from the boiler. Ho contends that the present method of propelling v-saeels by steam creates enormous friction, and that the loss in this way, as shown by repeated trials by Mr Froude on ships in her Majesty’s navy, is 58 per cent. Captain Griffiths’ idea of propulsion is to place the cylinder fore and aft and use tho steam in the same way -s a rocket mixture, taking tho forward thrust us the propelling power, without the intervention of machinery. Captain Griffiths written a Email work explanatory of his theory and with regard to the construction of propelling cylinders and nozzles he states that the cylindsr should be sufficiently large to give the required forward pressure, and that tho hole for the discharge must be small enough to keep up tho full pressure of steam for propelling, and large enough to allow the full measure of the distance, with an allowance per cent, for slip of the size of tho cylinder to be discharged at that pressure. The advantages of employing Btoam by Captain Griffiths’ method I--.ro alleged to hath it a great deal of unnecessary machinery and a screw propeller are done away with, and for war vessels this would be a gain, as neither would be damaged in a seaway, or by a shot in an engagement. Captain Griffiths has also an adaptation of his method for the propulsion of balloons.
