DROWNED IN THE AVON.
At a quarter to eight o’clock this morning Constable 'May was on duty and received information that a woman’s body had been observed in the river, near Park Terrace and Salisbury street, on the Hagley Park side of the river. The body, which lay face upwards in the water, with the head down stream, and the hands raised above the water, was taken cut at once, and is that of a woman about forty-five years old, and sft. lin. in height. About fifteen yards away the oonstablo found a brown waterproof cloak, in a pocket of which were a pair of black cotton gloves, and a pair of black beaded mittens. There was also found a Maori kit containing a black and white knitted woollen shawl, a white pocket handkerchief with red border, and a black eilk hat. These articles were taken with the body to the morgue. Deceased, who has not yet been identified, wore a brown wincey dress, dark ribbed woollen stockings, prunella boots, and a red flannel wrapper under the dress. Her hair is thin and of a light brown color tinged with grey, her face round and chubby, and her forehead narrow.
