A largo body of the native population, who hnd boeu roused to a high pitch of excitement D 7 the i-xhorta'ions ot Mohammedan fanatics, made a murderous attack yesterday upon the European residents in Alexandria. Several persons were killed and wounded. Mr Oookson, the British Consul, was shot at and severrly injured. One oE the engineers of the Superb, who was walking quietly in trhe street, was attacked by the nub and killed. The rioting lasted for five hours, the police remaining supine. Tl:e military were a v i Ust called upon to euppreas the disturbance, and they succeeded ultimately in restoring order. The wounded reoeived shelter at the French Consulate. During the outbreak a number of shops were plundered
by the risers. The Greek and Italian Consuls were wounded, and the European ladies and children were sent for safety on board the ironolads stationed in the harbor. The number of lives lost during the outbreak is estimated at forty. Immediately on hearing of the outbreak, Dervish Pasha, the Turkish Commissioner, left Cairo, and proceeded with all possible speed to Alexandria.
