An information has been laid against the captains and owners of the steamers which oonveyed visitors to H.M.S. Nelson last Bunday for over-orowding. A meeting of Italians has been held to express their admiration for tho lato General Garibaldi. It is probable that an Italian werking men's olub will be formed here. The comet reported to have been seen in other parts of the colony has not yet been seen here.
Hearn has accepted the challenge to row Beynolds, of Sydney, for £IOO, and adds that ho will allow him £25 expenses to come to Wellington. Hearn also states that there are no skiffs in Wellington. Beynolds should bring two with him from Sydney, and ho will toss for choice.
HOKITTKA, June 17,
Oormiok and party, at the Woodstook rush, washed up on Saturday and obtained twentytwo ounces of gold as a result from forty loads of washdirfc. A number of other claims will wash up immediately, they having been waiting for water. Tho rush is extending daily, and there are about twelve hundred men on tho field.
TIMABTJ, June 18. Detective Kirby left yesterday for San Franoiooo, via Auckland, in quest of the levanting debtor Shepherd. There was an exceptionally large number of meteors visible the last two mghts, and a slight display of Aurora Australis. OAMARTJ, June 18. Neil McPh?e, who was injured by the Kartigi railway accident, died yesterday, after lingering twenty-four days. To-day his remains were interred with military honors. Owing to the difficulty that has been experienced for the past month or two in getting produce away from this port, through a scarcity of yeesels, there is a talk of forming a shipping company to trade between O.'maru and other ports. DUNBDIN, June 18. Bather a serious aocident occurred in George street last night, whilst a fire escape was being tried. Two firemen were coming down from the top storey of a drapery warehouse, when the rope broke, and the two fell through the verandah on to the pavement. Two boys named Finlayson were struck by the men as they landed, Bnd were stunned. One remained unconscious all night, but neither is seriously injured. The firemen escaped with a few bruises. A Fortrose telegram brings word that a young gentleman named Slater, recently from home, who was on a visit to Mr B. S. Vernon, of Toitois station, has been discovered lyiDg dead beside a creek in the bush. He had been out shooting, and his gun had evidently discharged i'self, as the top of the young rnr.n's head was blown dear off. His body had evidently lain all night. A telegram has reached the " Daily Times " from Sydney stating that Naw Zealand producers are foolish to glut thst market with potatoes and oats, misled by market reports. The telegram adds that a quantity of good onts was withdrawn from sale at 2s 8d per bushel.
