RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of this Council was held in Chambers on Friday evening laßt. Present —The Mayor, Mr Johnston, Crs. Stephens, Boyd, Ivory, Ellis, Burt and Gulliver. Correspondence received, read and considered :—From honorary secretary, Rangiora Fire Brigade, forwarding the audited balance-sheet of accounts for the past yoar. From Messrs McKay and Stevenson, and Messrs Kirk and Grompion, re supply of pans for Rangiora. From Mr G. F. Smith, for permission to erect post in front of premises. Granted. From Mr N. Diggle, of Christohurch, asking for appointment as foroman for Council over the proposed asphalting of footpath from Bassinglhwaite's property to Mr Fulton's, corner of Poroeval street. Commissioner of Charitable Aid, with cheque for £-1 6j for month of May last. Petition from ratepayers and residents in Church and King streets and neighborhood, calling attention to the number of stray h:rsos and oattle wandering about that portion of the borough, to the detriment of nil the gardens and small properties adjacent thereto, and asking for same to be considered, so that means mif?ht be taken to abate the nuiaanco. Referred to the police. From Timaru wreok committee, asking the 00-operation of Council to assist funds of same to relieve the sufferers. Subsequently dealt with. J. Anderson, ahout an improved mud soraper (badly wanted), offering same at a reasonable price. Petition from ratepayers asking the assistance of tho Borough Council in procuring a steam fire engine. Petition from ratepayers in Ivory street, suggesting improvements in the thoroughfare of that street, and petitioning same to bo made. It was proposed by Or. Burt, seconded by Or. Ellis—" That subscription Hats bo placed in Banks re Timaru disaster." J- Johnston proposed, and Or. Ivory seconded, a vote of thanks to the Volunteer Firo Brigade for tho great efficiency displayed in mustering at all alarms of fire, showing that the members of tho brigade were ever ready to do all in their power to assist in chocking firo and saving the property. It was proposed and carried—- " That a committee be formed (to consist of His Worship the Mayor, Cra. Ellis and Gulliver, and Messrs Gulliver, Blackett and Crothers) to inquire into and got all necessary information as to the amount of support likely to be given by the association, and other matters connected with the introduction of a steam fire engine." The works committee were appointod to make all necessary inquiries respecting asphalting about to be done in the borough, and to repent thereon at a future
meeting. The petition re Ivory street *«• left in the hands of the surveyor to attend to. Tenders were opened for the concrete kerbiag, and Mr T. M. Scudder's aocepted at *W it 6d per ohain. Work to be commenced forthwith. Surveyor'! report road, considered and adopted. The clerk stated that tne receipts for the past month amounted to #lot> 18* 6i; balance in Bank, £227 2» 10d } accounte passed for payment, £B4 15s. «Jr. Ellis moved, Or. Burt seoonded—" That tne tPostmaster-Goneral be written to asking for a postal delivery in the borough j as also the clerk to write to Mr laaao Wilson, the member for the district, asking him to urge upon the Government the necessity of granting the petition for the commercial interests of this rapidly increasing borough." It was proposed that the Police Station be removed to a more central locality, and the Government to be petitioned thereon, but the matter was postponed, posßtbly until the post cftiao and othor Government offices are necessarily removed, and the whole matter will ba considered then. After some further routine business, a vote of thanks was accorded to the chair and the meeting brought to a close.
