[Per s e. Wakatipu, at Wellington.] SYDNEr, June 7. Government intend spending £6OOO in tho improvement and renovating of the Go vernor's country residence at Moss Vale. Mr Peechey, member for Bathurat, died on the sth, consequent upon the injuries received by fulling from a buggy. A dog bit tho horse, whioh bolted, throwing Mr Peohey out of the buggy, when he received tho fatal injuries. An onlooker who saw the Fairlight steamer run down and sink the Oaprey on the 6ch, Etates his belief that those aboard tho Fair light never saw the Osprey. The latter vessel is valued at £ICOO, but it is not known if she was insured. An inquiry will shortly be commenced.
MELBOURNE. Mr Archibald Forbes publishos an article in the " Argus" on the colonial defences. He considers tho only danger to the cole nice would be a sudden raid by a small forco. He recommends the forts to be manned by regular artillerymen, and armed wish the latest guns. He believes it advisable to lccalieo colonial forces in maritine towns only. Mr Forbesleotured at Ballarat on the sth. Counsel for Arthur Sieber, who reoently shot a barmaid in Rusael street, informed the Magistrate that Sieber was now a raving lunatic
In tho Legislative Council on the 6 th, a committee was appointed to enquire into the ciuse of tho Jolimont railway aooidect. Mr Z.-bI stated that the accident oost the colony £45,000, and the business was badly conducted when the catastropho oocurred.
It is stated in the Assembly that a csrtaiu firm printed 300,000 circulars in Melbourne, shipped them to Sydney, where they were posted, Melbourne thus evading the postage, The Postrnfftor-Grnersl said he was bound to deliver circulars so posted. ADELAIDE.
Sir Wm. Jervois has sent a memo, to the Government regarding the naval defences of the colony, and recommends the purchase of war vessels, capable of steaming fourteen knots hourly, with five gunp, the whole oost ing £45,000. He recommends also torpedos for Port Creok, and the organisation of an efficient naval force. A deputation of tho Chamber of Commerce has asked the Postmaster-General to introduce an uniform penny postage in the colony. Mr Parsons deolined on tho ground that the change would involve a loss of £20,000 yearly. Two Chinamen have been muraored by blaoks in the Northern Territory ,- two others were badly wounded. A full Court granted a rule nisi for prohibition against the magistrate oi Charters Towers regarding an order binding O'Kane, proprietor of the "Northern Miner," to keep the peaoe for twelve months, in consequence of oertain alleged inflammatory articles in that paper.
