Our markets dnring the past week have been rather quiet, owing in a great measure to the oold wet weather recently experienced. Trade, however, though small, continues sound, and if the present cautions disposition of buyers holds out, a quiet steady trade through the winter may be expected. A fair business has been done in fencing wire, chiefly for Nos. 8 and 10, at rales in favor of sellers, and as some sizes are getting in short supply, higher quotations than the present may be expected. Gornsaoka have had some little enquiry (being wanted for potatoes), but sales are only effected at unprofitable rates. The demand for good bottled ala and stout, also for geneva, prevalent some little time back, has now somewhat abated, recent arrivals having supplied immediate wonts, still a steaiy trade is being done, and if shipments continue on present limited scale, firmer rates must rule. Scotch whiskey has good enquiry, and sales for boat quality continue to be freely made. Lower sorts are not in much favor. Irish whiskey, principally _ Danville’s, meets with usual steady sales. Wines are unnoticed, except a small enquiry for medium port and low clarets. Sales of candles are noted at 3d for De Boubaix, and a shade over 9d for Belmonts. Kerosene, in spite of the season, continues a drug, and cannot be forced off at any reasonable price, stocks and shipments being excessive. In tobacco there has been some enquiry for low twists, which at present are in more request on account of retail competition; good qualities continue firm, but have only moderate sales; fancy sorts are still scarce, and command extrema figures. A fair business has been done in salt, both fine and coarse, particularly the latter. Teas continue neglected, a small business having only beou'done in medium sorts at 14d, in bond. Small sales of sugars have been noticed at £3l 10s for best white crystals ; other sorts, on account of high quotations, have but trifling sales. A small business has been done in dried fruits, sales of currants being freely made at sd. Eleme raisins are a shade easier, while Muscatels, on account _of short supply, command excessive rates. Oils, both boiled and raw, are being forced off at low rates, without leading to much business.
