THE EXECUTION.
rpBESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM. 1 NEW PLYMOUTH, June 8. Hiroki, for the murder of Mr MoLean at Momahake, was executed in New Plymouth gaol this morning at eight o'clook. Last night the prisoner enjoyed a quiet natural sleep, but on waking this morning the recollection of the solemn proceedings distressed him, and he wept somewhat freely. He, however, recovered his composuro shortly afterwards, and a cheerful disposition. Archdeacon Govett attended him, and was engaged for sometime in spiritual devotion? previous to his being taken to the gallows. The scaffold was erected in the north-east corner of the prison, in front of the cells where Te Whiti and wore oonfiaed. Bhortly after eight o'clock the prisoner was brought out from his cell and pinioned in the usual manner. He then asoended the scaffold with a firm step, and although his countenance was paled, he botrayed no other signs of emotion. He stepped forward to the spot indicated by the exeoutioner, and stood firmly while the rope was being adjusted and the cap put on. The last words of the Burial Service had scarcely been spoken, when the drop fell, and Hiroki disappeared out of sight. Death was instantaneous, as soarcely a muscle was moved.
