From the 4th to the 31st May 233 oases of measles, two of typhus, four of scarlatina, and two of scarlet fever were reported to the city sanitary inspector. A number of school teachers are now absent from duty, having the measles or scarlatina in their houses. At Cambridge West a ratepayers' poll being in favor of an increase of licenses being made, Mr Gan applied for a license for the sixth time for his hotel. The Bench refused on the ground that the license was not necessary. A movement is being made to found a Tobacco Growing and Manufacturing Company, and local capitalists are moving in the matter, WELLINGTON, June 3. The following telegram has been received by Sir Maurice O’Rorke, Speaker of the House of Representatives :—“ The promoters of the New Zealand International Exhibition present their compliments, and will be glad if you and members of the Assembly will honor the Exhibition with a visit, and will be glad to know the day and hour, in order to give visitors a suitable reception.” To this Sir M. O'Rorke replied : —“ The House has not yet expressed any opinion about visiting the Exhibition. Personally I hope we shall bo afforded an opportunity of doing so.” It is understood that arrangements will probably be made for the visit to take place. A guarantee of £6OO has been given by leading citizens towards a ball to be given on Thursday to Commodore Erskine and the officers of the Nelson and Miranda. His Excellency, Lady Gordon, and Mies Gordon have accepted invitations to be present. Invitations have also been sent to the members of the Legislature. The guarantee is exclusive of the price charged for tickets. The band from H.M.B. Nelson played selections in the Botanical Gardens this afternoon. There was a great crowd present, but the proceedings were marred by a fall of rain. The Nelson is under orders to be ready for sea on Saturday next, and his Excellency will probably leave for Fiji on Monday week. DUNEDIN, June 4.

At a meeting to-day of the Invercargill North licensing district, the police drew attention to the want of means of escape from publichouses in case of fire. The committee cordially concurred with a suggestion that, in the case of two-storey houses especially, supplying such appliances should be made compulsory. The applicants for renewals of licenses undertook to have rope ladders or other means of escape from the upper storeys provided. It is understood that a railway employe in the locomotive department intends to commence an action against the Government for overtime, alleged to have been promised by one of the Ministers, bnt never paid. He has kept an accurate record of his time for several years, and it is understood that his claim will amount to a tidy sum. Should he succeed there are a number of others prepared to follow suit. There is still a great scarcity of trucks on the Southland railways.
