TIMARU STEEPLECHASES. I FBSSS ASSOCIATION TBLBSEAM.J TIMARU, June 1. The Timarn Steeplechases to-day were attended by about 800. It was a dull day, and one heavy showor fell. The racing was capital, though the fences were too stiff. The Cup, Tally Ho and Consolation were excellent races between the horses placed. The Maiden was a failure as a race, but amusing from the difficulties which all the horses but one got into. There were a good many spills, but the only one at all serious was that of Kelly, the rider of Moltke in the Maiden. He came down very heavily, and sustained a very severe shaking, but fortunately nothing worse. One totalisator on the ground put through £829. Everything passed off well, and the sport was much enjoyed by all present. Timaeu Steeplechase Cup Handicap, 120 bovs ; about three miles. Mr J. Pilbrow’s Clarence, 12st 111 b (Lana) 1 Mr D. O’Brien’s Katerfelto ... (Clifford) 2 Mr W. Douglas’ Baron, 10st 121 b (Heaton) 3 Quamby, list; Tonng Sledraere, lOat 12lb ; Why Not, lOat 101 b (2Jlb overweight), also started.
Betting—ls to 10 on Clarence, 5 to 2 Katerfelto, 3 to 1 Quamby, 4 to 1 the rest. The starting point was at the far side of the course, the first jump being artificial and double. All got over except Young Sledmere which refused at once, and Quamby which came down. Baron led the way, followed by Katerfelto, Whynofc and Clarence. All came along in good style to the jump into the road where Quamby came down agaio, and several others, including Clarence, were thrown out, Baron and Katerfelto got over this awkward double all right, and sailed away in flue style. Clarence soon followed them. Baron generally jumped too low, and struck a good many jumps, bringing his rider on to his neck. After passing tho stand a second time Katerfelto took the lead from Baron, Clarence being a very little way behind. The double off the course, the two paddock fences, and the double into the course were safely negotiated by the three. On getting into the reserve again, Clarence went «p and took the artificial double a few feet ahead. Here, one after another, all three stumbled and tumbled, and the amusing spectacle of three horses getting into difficulties one after another and close together produced intense amusement. Heaton’s trick of hanging to a horse’s neck stood him in good stead, and he was first to got away, Clarence being next, Katerfelto last, two or three lengths separating each. The worst was now over, but Baron had had too much. Clarence and Katerfelto soon passed him and raced home, taking tho remaining gorse jump side by side, Clarence then forged ahead and covered the sod wall three lengths ahead of Katerfelto, and eventually won hands down by about four lengths. Baron was third. Quamby completed a round and a half and finished inside the course. Why Not and Young Sledmere were stuck up in the turf road, and returned to the saddling paddock by the thoroughfare. Maiden Steeplechase Handicap, 50 sova. Mr 8. Armitage’a Black Doctor, lOat I2lb (B. Nichols) 1 Overdraft, 12at 71b ; Canard, 12st 41b ; Gang Awa, list Sib; Kosciusko, 10st 51b; and Moltke, lOst 61b, also started. Betting, 2tol on the field. This race was a poor one, bat was full of incident. The start took place near the stand, and the first jump was a double over the road. Xoaoinsko and Moltke got into the road straight, the three others baulking. Canard made some mistake, and drew ont of the race. Moltke stuck at the second jump and Kosciusko at the next fence. After a time all got into the paddock, and Overdraft and Moltke showed a way out and over the road. Again at the double on the course Overdraft fell, and Moltke, following at his heels, came down over him, and both horses gob away. Kosciusko came up about two minutes afterwards, and stuck at tho same jump. Blaok Doctor then came along, and getting over safely, went on his course alone and finished at his leisure.
Tallt-Ho Handicap of 75 sots, with a Sweep of 2 sots each for (five) acceptors, to go to the second horse. Distance about two and a half miles. Mr J. Pilbrow’s Clarence, 12at 121 b (H. Lunn) 1 Mr D, O’Brien’s Trovatore, lOat 51b (Cotton) 2 Mr W.Douglas’ A.Q., 10st 71b... (Geaton) 3 VVhy Net (lOst s£lb), and Young Sledmere (XOst 131 b), also started. Clarence and Trovatore were the favorites in the betting, Clarence and Young Sledmere led over the first fence into the road. Clarence took the second of the doubles all right, the rest sticking at it, Why Not permanently. Trovatore was the first to follow Clarence, then A.GK got over, only to stick in the road when he came to it again till the other two got half a mile ahead of him. Young Sledmere got fast in the paddocks. Clarence and Trovatore went the rest of the course in close company. Clarence was slightly ahead at the sod wall —the last jump—and, amid loud applause, won by loss than a length. Consolation Handicap of 40 boys ; two miles. Mr W. do Q. Reeves’Overdraft, list 10 b (Armstrong) 1 Mr O’Brien’s Trovatore, list 51b (Cotton) 2 Mr Douglas’Baron, list 121 b ... (Lyford) 3 Gang Awa, lOst 131 b, also started. Selling Hack Rack (Flat), of lOsovs; ono mile. Mr Lawson’s Sandy won, beating three others.
